Frank Zappa (cond.)
Pomona Valley Symphony Orchestra
Mount St.Mary's College, Los Angeles
May 19th 1963

~~ alternate version to (T__) seed ~~

As opposed to the T__ version, seeded there in FZ Radio Shows/Interviews,
this Drew ZRP Archives version
- does not include radio host's introduction talk (Carlos Hagen),
- it is differently tracked (music and FZ spoken word kept separate),
- it is speed corrected (-100cts from orig.Drew wav file) to sound closer in tune with the 440 Hz A;
both (T__) version and Lost Episodes excerpt are about a quarter tone sharp.

Sound quality:
B+/B for the music, not as bright as the T__ version, but more balanced in the mid-range and basses.
B to C for the talking, sometimes hard to understand, more volume boosting would turn parts of this recording too hissy imo.

available tapes according FZshows:
50 min, FM, B

This copy: 48.29 min, FM(?), B+/B (B to C for the FZ talking)
Source: FM (or pre-FM?, Aud? - some of the talking does sound like it's audience sourced)
Equipment: unknown
Lineage: Maxell II Cassette>Gina20>Sound Forge (record/edits)>CDWave>
FLAC Level 8 > wav > Soundforge 5:speed correction,volume level adjustment, tracking > FLAC FFE lvl7 w/SBA (255 MB)

This is one, I was not sure if worthwhile, but that mid-range is near perfect. i was thinking a good EQ on this, and it would sound awesome. So it's worth throwing out there. I think we have all the ranges there. The other copy does have a higher range, but has an unpleasant sound in a way, it's too high, not quite right, there too, a good EQ. So choices are good, make up your own mind. I myself am keeping both.

If the Lost Episodes version was about a quarter tone sharp, mightn't that suggest that either:

(i) it was performed about a quarter tone sharp, or

(ii) that's the way (uh-huh, uh-huh) Frank liked it (uh-huh, uh-huh)... and, thus, meant for it to be heard by miscreants like us?

Regardless, thanks for adding this to the already-glorious pile of ZT auditory treasures!!

Probably! What I think we are trying to accomplish is how the audience heard it. Maybe we failed? Our best guess.
