The Aspen Wind Quintet
Times Beach (World Premiere)
Alice Tully Hall, New York City
1985 May 8th

~~ Audience source version ~~

Not sure whether the date or the location of this recording is really correct,
as the info I have received with these files seems to be conflicting
with what I'm reading in FZshows/FZTributes,

Quote:
Aspen Wind Quintet: 8-May 1985, Coolidge Auditorium, WDC
14 min, FM, B+
Times Beach

and also in Drew's Zappa tape list info.
Quote:
5/8/85
Aspen Woodwind Quintet - 2 movements from Times Beach
15 minutes EX-

Meanwhile, thanks to Drew (and to UniMuta) this has been clarified:

from
http://www.united-mutations.com/a/aspenwindquintet.htm :

Frank Zappa was commissioned by the Naumburg Foundation to write a piece for the Aspen Wind Quintet.
The piece was called 'Time's Beach' and premiered in 1985.

At the time, the Aspen Wind Quintet consisted of:

Barli Nugent: flute
Claudia Coonce: oboe
David Krakauer: clarinet
Timothy Ward: bassoon
Kaitilin Mahony: french horn

This version: 21.42 min, Aud, B/B- hissy

The Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Auditorium in the Thomas Jefferson Building is in Washington DC.
DC being "The District of Columbia" Not in state of Washington.
It's possible we have more then one recording here, one from NY, and one from DC, so i guess i better check....
Appears too that wind, not woodwind is the proper name.
Also Americans in general write mm/dd/yy So my list says May 8th as does Jon's. And the UM page so May 8th it is.

Thanks for all the additional info, Drew.
Seems you have been doing the largest part of my homework ... Very Happy

Last question: "Time's Beach" or "Times Beach" ?
Yellow Shark Liner notes appear to be in favour of latter,
but some fineprint explanation by FZ himself seems to be mentioning a dioxin-infested place named Time's Beach (whereabouts ?) .

On the other hand, googling for this place's name brings us back to this spelling:
Times Beach (Missouri, btw ...)
among others: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Times_Beach,_Missouri

So I guess, we can reasonably stick with that spelling, without the apostrophe. Wink

Yes, for sure this is right. Time's Beach sounds like a place Dr. Who would visit.

The FM version may be what i have, it's damn good, samples later...

update:
Yes, one of two examples is the FM, and probably from DC too, 2 movements only.
They mention the World Premiere in the past tense. Includes analysis at start.
Will check other example.....

update part duo:

other example is audience, and it sounds just about exactly like this one.
The FM is for sure from DC and includes 2 movements, untitled, which may mean they are two new movements. Our experts can decide that.
The movements are described as untitled which means they are new, or maybe a medley of existing movements. Not sure till i give a few listens to all of this including the Yellow Shark stuff, i'll leave that for others...as I continue to transfer....
Appears to be two known movements, the announcers just have no clue....

The fm is II and III, so yes the only example. We need a good copy, hopefully someone can produce a slightly better version. The FM version would be interesting to compare as to how EM handles the pieces compared to the AWQ.

This thread has now been moved from Samples/Fills to FZ Related.

A new torrent, with new file names ("AWQ 850508-NYC - Times Beach I.flac" etc.),
new info.txt and new ffp.txt has also been uploaded today (2007-09-05 05:33),

replacing the old one
(with file names "The Aspen Wind Quintet 850508 Aud - Times Beach I.flac"etc.)

Music content (i.e. ffp) is unchanged.

Damn - flambay even posted this one on my birthday! Smile

Shame I wasn't about to grab it at the time. I've had a heaping pile of miserable schecht poured on my life in the past few months, resulting in new job, new house and new ISP.

I'm actually moving into the new place in a week's time, so give it a couple of weeks and I'll DL this one gleefully Mr. Green
