Lakshi's Delight
Also known as Lakshi's Delite
Recorded circa 1987 ~ 1989, UMRK

The Outtakes Flood continues...

Here is an unreleased Synclavier track from the post-Jazz From Hell, pre-Civilization Phaze III era, named in tribute to FZ's boon companion Lakshminarayana Shankar.

Please note: It is my understanding that this track originates from a lossy source.

It is also my understanding, from the super-cool person who was the source of many of my rarest FZ rarities, that this track does not circulate in any other form.

My guess is that— like the Beatles Get Back reels— this track was archived via minidisc or similar compressed storage medium as part of its lineage.

Lakshi just might be my favourite unreleased FZ track of all time. I've never come across another copy. I believe the quality and ultra-scarcity of this piece should overcome any qualms about source. If any of the faithful here can prove me wrong by posting a lossless version, please do so! If not, and if the lineage of this track is accepted, perhaps this thread could be moved to the Outtakes/Unreleased forum.

In the meantime, enjoy this rarest of Zappa treats!

I dedicate this torrent to my friends from Zappanale 18. May we meet again at Zappanale 19!

Lineage: (sorry, can't reveal the original source) > unknown digital storage medium (possibly minidisc) > CDR > EAC v0.95 beta 4 > wav > TLH 1.1.1 (Build 90) > flac Level 8 > your ears

Prog,

Thank You so much for this. Anything Synclavier, especially a track so rare, and dedicated too Shankar, can be nothing less than a treasure. Can not wait to hear it.

Just heard it, I love it. The Indian influence, with an almost church like quality to it; and too think, it is all a very efficient machine, that does not need rehearsing, does not complain, and works overtime.

Sincerely,

Wazoo BuffaloVoice dazzler1

I think Drew is referring to his Francesco Acetates samples seed.

It's true, no one did respond to that one, myself included ... Embarassed

I'll take a look at them in the next day or two, promised, D Smile

Meanwhile, thanks Progrockfan for this very unusual piece,
very much unlike anything else I have ever heard of Zappa.

... and also to give us the opportunity to make a speed check perhaps.

Progrockfan, in case you'd seed this version in FZ Unreleased/Outtakes,
please consider tuning it up +30cts, so people might be able to play along while listening Very Happy

Welcome back here, btw ... Smile

I agree with Flambay, this is a little flat.
In terms of music; what a beautiful little piece! Arresting and easily accessible,
would have made a fine candidate for The yellow shark.
Let's hope a lossless version eventually surface, or at least a definitive knowledge of lineage.

Flambay, you know that I regard your ears as a national treasure— but here's the thing: My understanding is that this track had no analogue steps in its lineage. This would seem to rule out tape drag or capstan motor variance; so from what source, or at what stage of its lineage, would speed fluctuation have been introduced?

FZ tended to compose very much within the 12-tone system— but this is computer music. I am a collector of computer music, and I can't name even one composer in this medium who doesn't monkey with relative pitch.

Your speed corrections are invariably dead-on accurate, and I am of course willing to go with your expert advice as always— but on this one occasion, I'd like to respectfully solicit some more opinions; because the last thing I want to do is mess with FZ's true intentions.

What medium was it on? I don't know much about DAT tape, but I would think it's possible, as it is tape. For sure with reel to reel, and vinyl also, depends how well your strobe works...
What was it on before MD? Did Frank put this on DAT tape? Again not familar with pitch and DAT tape. I would think yes it is possible, as I don't think pitch info is stored digitally. Seems tape drag could occur. Why someone would put this on MD, wow, huge mistake. Can't one revist master?

DAT is a true digital format hence its use for computer backup during the 90s. Any problems with the tape heads or speed result in the data not being read properly and then dropouts.

So say your battery is low, does it just cut out? Does pitch change? I know this doesn't apply here, just curious. Can you mess up pitch on DAT? ADAT? Or is pitch perfect everytime?
