Frank Zappa
State University of New York, Stonybrook, NY
October 15th 1978 Late Show

~~ 2nd source soundboard version ~~

As a complement to Drew's first soundboard version, seeded there: http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=9024 ,
here's an alternate soundboard version of the same show, also from Drew's tape collection.
Some may find the overall sound of this version even more pleasing to the ear than the other one.
Some have expressed their preference for this version in the sample discussion here.
It does have some difference in texture, well worth exploring.
In some instances the instruments sound clearer here, particularly the FZ solos and Vinnie's drums.

available tapes according JN:
78 min, SBD, A+/A
The SBD cuts in Pound For A Brown.

thx a lot,

just listened to the show today on some old cd's I have and would love to compare.

As we speak of SBD's. Anybody maybe has a better SBD of the 1984 08 25 show, than the one BF posted long time ago ?

And the 1978 10 27 SBD also only exists in some really bad sound. Anybody ?

Special thx to Drew for all the shows he offered to the world.

Ciao

Thanks! I have those boards, and may have secured them from other members here, don't remember? So maybe others can come up with better versions? I will look into it. Though I'm weeks behind, and this is a time of year i have little time. So not sure when i will get to these, but will eventually.
Also I have other boards I can update. I'm not done yet!! The audience recordings are endless, a large batch of shows is going out soon to Flambay, so between his other projects, it should be enough to keep us busy for a bit...
Yojimbo also has an endless amount of gems, it's nice for us too, as we could never compare so easy before, and both of us are finding gems and alternate versions, better copies etc. My collection has certainly grown.
Also thanks to the site. I recently lost 4.7 GB's of Zappa shows, luckily all were updated, so I didn't lose anything. Knowing too, I can come here, and replace anything is very nice. Well eventully we will have the best up here. it's getting better all the time.
Thanks Flambay, this show I think is why we collect Zappa. A definite must have. 78 was a good year!

is it me or does the drew version in the below thread sound like it has azmuth problems? my tape def sounds better and is from Steve Hecht which makes it very low gen, possibly a 2nd gen. Sorry for the lack of participation from me lately and not doing the sample thing. New job is kicking my fucking ass!

I didn't hear any problems like that. Usually a whooshing sound, noticable in the high end.
I traded a lot with Hecht, i can't rule out tape may be from him. I know I had numerous copies. One thing about Hecht, he didn't really care for quailty as he did for just having a version. He didn't want a copy of my Detroit 81 as he had another version. Mine was by far superior.
If you think it's superior, this is an important show, so samples would be great. As I said in the Ritz thread "everything can be updated".
