Frank Zappa
U.M.R.K., Los Angeles, CA
February 1980
Source: 2nd generation field recording
Equipment: unknown
Lineage: Maxell II-S Cassettes>Gina20>Sound Forge (record/edits)>CDWave>
FLAC Level 8
Transferred By: Drew
Edited By: Drew

Set list:
1) Bamboozled By Love
2) Pick Me I'm Clean
3) Bamboozled By Love (ending section)
4) Pick Me I'm Clean
5) Teenage Wind
6) Harder Than Your Husband
7) Bamboozled By Love
8) Harder Than Your Husband
9) Bamboozled By Love

Notes: Some dispute as to the date.

from FZShows:
Feb/Mar? 1980, UMRK
27 min, A/A-
The band rehearsing with a drum machine. Circulating under uncountable
different dates, often mixed with material from Crush All Boxes.
Bamboozled By Love/Pick Me I'm Clean/Teenage Wind/Harder Than Your
Husband

From Pbuzby:
There are two theories about this tape - one is that it is a winter '80
rehearsal from the period between Vinnie's departure and Logeman's
arrival, and the other (mine) that it is from a tracking session for
YAWYI. I discussed this once on e-mail with a guy who was in
Project/Object at the time. He called up Ike, who confirmed the first
theory. However, I still lean towards the second theory, especially
because the Teenage/Harder at the end of this tape is the performance
used as the basic track on YAWYI! Also, the P/O guy said that the
Zappa band alumni could be wrong sometimes. As well, Arthur Barrow
mentions on his site that they used a drum machine click track for
some songs when recording YAWYI.

From Drew: Some background on this recording:
When these first fell in collector's hands, they were with Crush All
Boxes takes, and a few live soundboard recordings from the 1980 fall
tour. The source did this for whatever reason? A collection of 1980
rehearsals and outtakes. This is the only rehearsal session on
the tape.

Credits: Thanks to TB for the tapes and Flambay for pitch
correction advice.

Flambay is one busy guy, I'm not sure what we are going to do if we lose him somehow. Looking at the 10-15-78 early audience samples, instructions are becoming complex. Seems he is getting better as time goes on. This one I used a pitch bend, as the points varied so much, and though a few points where tape stops and starts, not many. It made more sense to bend the pitch. One section also I applied a 2nd round of pitch correction to one song that was stuck in the middle of a start-stop section was off more than the rest. Corrections were extremely approximate. I like the bending as I would think to change pitch suddenly on a continous tape is just as inaccurate as not changing pitch at all.
Anyway I think pitch is closer to correct, but I doubt it is perfect.

I agree with theory #2. "Pick Me, I'm Clean" is faster than it was at the beginning of the Spring tour (or in any of the rehearsals that have been posted here) and contains the "check out my bandaid" line. Plus, Frank is clearly not concerned with arrangement details like he would be for a tour rehersal, but is more concerned with getting the band in sync with the drum machine. There is a drummer here (Logeman, I presume), and he clearly knows the material. If this were a rehersal recorded before the Spring tour, it's doubtful that the drummer would have known the songs so well.

Thanks for posting this!

I do too. I guess to put more meaning into my comments. It was packaged with fall tour outtakes, and Crush All Boxes' versions, which are really YAWYI outtakes. To add background, CAB was damn rare in 1981 when i got this tape, first time I heard those versions.
Later I traded for various radio shows with the CAB versions. A few years later maybe 84 or so, Test Pressings appeared. Still a very rare item. This was one of the first tapes i received from TB, just met him. God Damn!

Corrections:

I hate when this happens, damage in minimal.
I mis-spelled February text file
I use a generic text file to start, since I transfer so many tapes...
It's a Maxell XLII not a Maxell XLII-S.
Sorry, been dealing with both lately and a mix-up occured.
Don't change anything, just add a note.txt, so you can reseed in the future.
Checksum will confirm seedable version it's an archive checksum (all files).
Make changes, and it will fail.

Hehe, this is really a tribute to TB, who used to say this all the time, about twice a minute. His tapes rule, a great guy, a perfect gentleman. They don't mak'em better!
Tom who has met Zappa, hung out with him a couple times, good friends to the band members. Knows the inside untold shit about Frank, and he told me some great stories about the band, and Frank that he heard from various band members. What Frank talks about in public is nothing...hehe.
