Revenge Of The Knick-Knack People: Vari-Speed and True-Speed Versions
Also known as Curse Of The Knick-Knack People (as named by FZ himself, 22 Dec. 1989)
Recorded 1968
Broadcast 3 Jul. 1981, KPFK-LA
Taped by Jeff Allan / Transferred by drew51 / Edited by drew51 & flambay / Trimmed & speed-adjusted by progrockfan
A 2.25 excerpt of the complete Vari-Speed Version was officially released on Läther (disc 3, track 7)

These tracks are major sonic upgrades over the versions found on Apocrypha (disc 4, track 5) and Lumpy Gravy & Elsewhere (track 14).

The True-Speed Version is not a genuine FZ outtake-- but it is essential listening, because it reveals, in pristine clarity, the dozens of original elements (including some fascinating MOI improvisation) that went into the construction of the finished Vari-Speed track.

From drew51:

...it is very revealing and a whole different experience.

The complete KPFK interview is available on the tracker, posted by drew51 and flambay at http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=8342.

Where Credit Is Due Dept: progrockfan provided a beginning fill, speed-adjusted the True-Speed Version, and wrote a .txt file— but drew51 and flambay did the great majority of the work here.

Enjoy!— drew51 / flambay / progrockfan

thanks for sharing all these gems and also for your expert contribution to FZ scholarship. A pleasure to download. My first time hearing the extended version of "200 Years Old" seeded along this wonderful weekend package of loose odds and ends. Found episodes, ah? The Fountain of Lost Episodes. No pissing around please. Cheers and lots of cheese to you and all participants of this exciting project.

Is this correctly placed as being recorded in 1968??? I always thought this came from some of the sessions we see in Baby Snakes with Bozzio and Ed Mann.

The slowed down version certainly sounds like the original Mothers. Were there two different lots of this type of recording, one from 1968 and one from 1977? Can anybody identify any bits of this particular one on Lather (apart from the Revenge of the Knick Knack People track itself)?

I just wanted to add that Frank for decades referred to this piece as Curse of the Knick Knack people, as documented in the 12-22-89 UMRK interview. Having this piece in the collection for over 22 years. I probably will always call it Curse. The short version released on Läther, an excerpt is Revenge, the long full piece is Curse. At least that the way we did and we liked it! <G>
I can't believe I have been listening to this for over 22 years, both versions, about time you guys heard it!

This is brilliant, Drew! I have changed the text of the post to reflect this information.

Might I add: It brightens my day, 7 days a week, to check these posts and learn something new about FZ from you extremely smart people! Smile Smile Smile

STUPENDOUS!!!!!!!
Most interested I am in these original speed takes/tapes. They reveal the method of direction like the similar tracks on the new MOFO . . .
VERY EXCITED TO HEAR MORE of these where the curtain is pulled back and you can see behind the mask . . .
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!
