Roelof Kiers' 1971 VPRO (Dutch TV) documentary, upgraded, digital source.

This documentary created quite a bit of upheaval here in Holland in 1971.
Questions were asked in parliament, the VPRO was officially reprimanded, different times I guess.

This version is done from the March 8 2006 (8 am) digital broadcast on VPRO Geschiedenis Holland.

The differences with the version I did in october 2005, from a VHS of the 1988 broadcast, are:

a) On the up side, this version has:
- Much better video quality.
Even though the 2005 VHS based version wasn't bad at all.

- Better audio quality.
Probably as good as it's ever going to be (no compression on my part). After all, the source material quality is no doubt limited, since it was 1971 and for TV.

- No Dutch subtitles
Other versions were broadcast, during 2006 on VPRO geschiedenis, that do contain subtitles; not this one though.

b) On the down side:

- "VPRO Geschiedenis..." banner running over the top for about 20 seconds, in several places.
Unfortunantly all three versions I have (March 4, March 8, May 2006 I think, Chunga's Revenge sent me that last one) have those banners in exactly the same places. I considered repacing those bits with the video from the 1988 VHS, I even tried it on for size, but hated the result because of the difference in video quality. So I decided to keep the rolling banners (a case of lesser evil).

- (alternating) logo(s) in top right corner in this version.

OVERALL:
It's definitly an upgrade over my october 2005 version
It might even be the ultimate version, at least until I can get into the VPRO vaults (don't hold your breath).

The Lineage:
- From my digital cable reciever, through analog output, to KISS DP558 Hard-Disk-Recorder, recorded on highest quality MPEG2, AC sound, PAL 720*576.
- To computer, over my network,
- Some clipping in Studio version 9, saved as DV.
- Re-encoded to MPEG in TMPEGenc.
Done that to get rid of noise along the top, masked top 5 lines;
To: MPEG2, PAL 720*576, 7000 kb/s, VBR two pass (highest quality (very slow)), 384 kb/s AC sound).
- Authored using TMPEGenc DVD author, with 24 chapters menu.

============================== That's all folks ===========================

Cool, going out all the way to Saturn! Speaking of which the Cassini photos just released of Saturn look cool. Amazing what Nasa can do!

Thank you very much for the upgrade !!! wings

If you can chose from a digital source, like in your case, it would be wise to "record" directly in digital quality, and not via analog output.

That means with a digital PC-TV-card (for example), it is possible to "shovel" the already digitalised material on the hard-disc. No further digitalisation is necessary.

Re-encoding always means loss of quality. sage

Again - thank you anyway !!! cheers

I realise that; however my cable reciever only has analog output for video, as well as for audio.
Thanks anyway, gotta stay on that learning curve. imslow
