Phaze II of the Outtakes Flood… a unified collection of 28 FZ radio promos.

Thirteen of these promos are sourced from previous posts by teasea, blackpage, and unicrayon; six are culled from the Psychedelic Promos & Radio Spots series (note that Volume 8’s so-called ‘FZ Spirit Concert Promo’ has nothing to do with FZ); and nine are sourced from my own collection.

The 1969 Uncle Meat LP promo features snippets of unreleased music and dialogue from the Meat sessions (Oct.-Dec. 1967 and early 1968, Apostolic Studios NYC, and later in 1968, Sunset Studios LA).

I cannot GUARANTEE the FZ-ness of the 1968 Buenos Aries Radio promo—however: a) it originates from an unimpeachable trading source; b) it features Uncle Meat-style percussives; and c) it dates from a time when FZ was doing lots of commercial work (The Big Squeeze, Remington Electric Razor, and other promos included here). This track should stir up some interesting discussion—opinions welcome! (As if I could stop you.)

I know there are more FZ promos out there… keep ‘em coming, folks!

* * *

—A Note on Cataloguing FZ Promos—

Promos are hard to tell apart by merely looking at a label—and that makes them hard to collect. There is no equivalent to JN’s concert lists—which assist greatly in the organization of FZ live shows—for the collector of promos.

I propose that FZ promos be catalogued like this:

Promo [Date] [Source] [Subject] [#, if more than one promo with the same subject]
“First words spoken in the promo”

In the case of promo sets with identical spoken word intros (i.e., Weasels Ripped My Flesh 1-4 and Put Speed Down 2-3), the spoken words listed in the description should be the first words that are unique to that promo.

* * *

Here’s what you’ll find in this collection:

Promo 1966-11-30 LA Berkeley MOI Hop
“Those creative Mothers, the Mothers of Invention, invade Berkeley…”

Promo 1967-12-05 Freak Out~Absolutely Free LPs
“Hi kids. Seriously now, this is your friends, the Mothers of Invention…”

Promo 1968-11-27 LA St Vitus Dance Concert
“Cal Tech, Scott Brown Hall…”

Promo 1968 Anti-Smack & Downers PSA
“Hello folks, this is Frank Zappa, here to suggest…”

Promo 1968 Buenos Aries Radio
“(spoken in Espanol)”

Promo 1968 KPPC-LA Sounds Incredible Music Store
“Sounds Incredible is located at 7505 Sunset Boulevard…”

Promo 1968 KRLA-LA Put Speed Down PSA 1
“Suzy? Suzy Speedfreak?…”

Promo 1968 KRLA-LA Put Speed Down PSA 2
“You’re going to die from using speed…”

Promo 1968 KRLA-LA Put Speed Down PSA 3
“I would like to talk to you about speed…”

Promo 1968 KRLA-LA Put Speed Down PSA 4
“I would like to suggest that you do not use speed…”

Promo 1968 LA Secret Ceremony Film
“Secret Ceremony doesn’t open until Wednesday…”

Promo 1968 WOR-NY Hagstrom Guitars
“This is your old buddy, Frank Zappa of the Mothers of Invention…”

“Hi there kids. The name of this song is called Peaches En Regalia…”

Promo 1969 Hot Rats LP 4
“Hot Rats is a new album on Bizarre/Reprise…”

Promo 1969 Uncle Meat LP
“That was Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, from their new album…”

Promo 1970 Weasels Ripped My Flesh LP 1
“You have a record album cover there…”

Promo 1970 Weasels Ripped My Flesh LP 2
“Would you like to ask the magical question?…”

Promo 1970 Weasels Ripped My Flesh LP 3
“This is an album cover…”

Promo 1970 Weasels Ripped My Flesh LP 4
“Oh, I don’t wanna be on the radio…”

Promo 1971 200 Motels Film

Very nice, progrockfan! I'll fill in some gaps soon - think I have two extra Hot Rats spots, for example.

I have a few of these scattered throughout the collection, thanks for putting them together.
Other FZ promo collections exist also.
More than one 200 motel promo exist, but I think they all have been released commercially.
I know somewhere I have a Detroit promo
KBFH promos
1988 Albany, NY spot
All kinds of TV promos
a couple hundred MTV and USA network spots
1986 KPFA spots
You can't do a collection w/o the Dental floss spots come on!
1981 Anti drug spot
1981 KTYD concert spot fro Santa Barbara
1980 KROQ Draft card spot
11-13-77 Denver concert spot
1974 Apostrophe TV spot

To assist in the cataloguing of radio promos:

When a station's call letters are named, here's a useful link to help determine the city of origin--

I have a spot for 1980 Wembley Arena (an announcer talks over the "Drafted" single version) and a couple variations on the 1981 tour spot where FZ calls the band a "tiny dangerous orchestra."

Perfection itself, pbuzby! I am gratified at the response to this post. Together we shall conquer the world!

Wrong year; should be 1968-11-30

1974 Apostrophe TV spot

Drew, is that the one that begins with a voice screaming "Frank Zappa's newest LP Apostrophe" over the Cosmik Debris guitar solo? If so, good, I've been looking through my tapes for the raw version - I have a NR'ed one on CDR.

I'm also planning to include a spot or two for the Melbourne '76 shows, a Drowning Witch spot and the Saratoga '84 spot.
Then, isn't there some video commercial spots FZ did for a Seattle power company in the early 90's or so? Pretty sure I have it on video, but no working VHS player at the moment.

Update: I'll also do two Chunga's Revenge spots and a couple of Uncle Meat ones. And I think my Hot Rats spots sound a bit better than these, so I'm planning to include all 6 of them.
