This is Phaze I of what a Very Important Zappateer describes as an “Outtakes Flood”… early mixes of two songs officially released on Absolutely Free, 26 June 1967. Check the Samples forum at http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?p=68930#68930 for a discussion of how these compare with Yojimbo's version of these tracks.

1) Uncle Bernie's Farm (Premix) 2m05s
Working title: Send Santa Claus Back To The Rescue Mission
Recorded 15 Nov. 1966, TTG Studios LA

2) Son Of Suzy Creamcheese (Premix) 1m34s
Recorded 16 Nov. 1966, TTG Studios LA

Lineage: Traded CDR > EAC v0.95 beta 4 > wav > Cool Edit Pro 2.1 > normalize to 0 dB > FLAC Frontend 1.7.1 > FLAC Level 8 > your ears

Enjoy!

I was happy to get these from Yojimbo and now an upgrade already? Shocked This place truly is the best. (Well, music is the best but you know what I meant! Wink ) Thanks for sharing progrockfan!

Stupidly late on this - I've only just started to wrap my head around bit torrent - but...

...I'm not sure if these tracks are genuine 'early mixes', y'know. I'd have to check but they basically sound like what happens when you take those songs and phase-inverse the stereo, cutting out the middle picture and leaving you with a mono signal comprising of what remains. When I was a teenager, and discovered that such 'mixing' was possible, I naturally went through the whole Zappa collection to see what 'alternate mix' results the process conjured up. I was especially pleased with the way Uncle Bernie/Susy Creamcheese sounded (especially the lack of bass on the drum fills).

(a short pause here while I do a quick audio experiment, just to make sure...)

Yep - these are definitely 'phase inversed' mixes of the official versions. I just imported the official CD mixes into Cool Edit Pro and hit them with the 'vocal cut' filter. Same results (although the torrent version isn't a 'pure' mono signal, suggesting that perhaps the tracks on the CD-R were captured from a cassette source originally). Not sure what the Soundforge equivilent of 'vocal cut' is but I'll wager you'd get those same results there.

Hope this isn't an annoyance...
