Frank Zappa
August 11th 1984
Oscar Mayer Theatre, Madison, Wisconsin
(also known as the Madison Civic Centre or The Capitol Theatre, it became the Oscar Mayer Theatre in 1980.)

Soundcheck
26:15 Aud, A-
Show
124:09 Aud, A

This is Steve Litin's source, direct from the taper to Hot Rats, who copied and sent it to me, so the Lineage is:
Master Cassette -> CDR(2) -> AIFF -> Peak (-30cts) -> Sound Studio (patches & track splits) -> xACT (align SBE, Flac level 5) -> You

Speed correction -30cts on flambay's advice.

The Soundcheck was likely recorded on a different tape, or possibly by a 3rd taper.
This tape runs an unbelievable 80 minutes before we get a tape flip, so I would love to know what gear Steve had back in 84. The disc were broken between Outside Now & Be In My Video, which is about 44 minutes in, and I was sure it was an auto-reverse deck and a patch would be needed, but the WAV files lined up and it looks as if nothing went missing. Possibly it WAS an auto-reverse deck and Steve just knew to hit reverse before the tape ran out? Would like to find out someday, but no patch was needed there. Tape was stopped during encore applause, but again, nothing missing.

The only patch was 1:27 at the beginning of Lets Move To Cleveland, which came from Rick's PCM-F1 master.
I made volume adjustments to Heavy Duty Judy to compensate for the taper adjusting levels, but I left the raw tracks for that and Cleveland in the Extras folder. (SBEs are aligned only for the tracks in the main folder.)
You can fit the Soundcheck at the beginning of the disc, and there are fade in and fade out tracks in the Extras folder.

Enjoy the show!

here's a nice shot of The Capitol Theatre from 1927:
http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/whi/fullimage.asp?id=4027

I couldn't find a good one after the Oscar Mayer renovations.
Anyway, this is one of my favorite 84 shows (there aren't a lot of those for me) and there were clearly 2 of the best tapers on hand that night that we have to thank for this!

neat another version...?

question though.

I have

840811 Madison 123m38 Aud M (a414)............a414 = analog 414

&

840811S Oscar Mayer Theatre Madison WI 26m16 (CA) CA = cheepnis Aroma

and also dismissed

840811 Madison Oscar Meyer Theatre 121m13 aud (dd) dd = dannyodare

as inferior to 2 above....no offence danny, just system here.

analog414's were from actual master recordings.

how does youres compare to this one please, I didnt see this one in the samples/fills section...could easily have missed it though. Smile hmm

Thanks! let's all sing along..

I wish I was an Oscar Mayer taper.
But instead I'm just a big weenie.
If I were an Oscar Mayer taper
Tape flips would a foreign thing to me.

Well, YOU NEED THIS: 840811 Madison 123m38 Aud M (a414)
but I think you will also need THIS!
There were a LOT of 8/11/84 samples (I think 5 of us had them up at one point), and I can see why BOTH of these tapes were listed as SBD and why both of them were traded so much (and even more important, LISTENED TO so much!). In case I didn't make it clear enough, this is MC of the 2nd source to Analog414's tape. I just wish we knew what gear was used and had cool photos like the Analog414 shows. I think any others will just turn out to be from Cassette copies of these.

Did I MENTION that those Analog414 tapes are best thing to happen so far this year?
They have made me awfully happy. I think maybe because I've had generated cassette-sourced copies of his tapes for so long...

anyway, back to downloading! (erm, UPloading...)

I agree totally... I have never been the biggest fan of the instrumentation in the '84 tour but I LOVE this show. So damn good I dont even notice what I dislike about it.

I am going to have a bigass beer when this one finishes! THANK YOU!!!! Smile Smile Smile
