Tonight's King Kong has to be one of the top five Monster Performances of all time. tunes

Nah.

I'll agree that the last few tracks should be seperately mentioned, quality-wise, but they're in line with a B- tape, especially considering the era. Perhaps the end of Happy Together would get a B-/C+ (see below), but that's still miles and miles from a C. Have you ever heard a C tape before? Trust me, it's not pretty. Smile Tape quality, at least round these parts, is on an exponential scale - ie, the difference between an A+ tape and an A tape isn't very noticible, but a C+ tape and a C tape are two completely different worlds of pain.

HOWEVER -- along the lines of quality -- it does seem, to my ears at least, that the final encore fills were transferred a bit loud. There's quite a bit of overdrive distortion towards the end of Happy Together (I haven't looked at the .WAV output, but my sense would be that if you divided the spectrum in fifths, the overdriven area would be the second-fifth) that almost sounds like vinyl cackle. Not performance-destroying by any means, but still audible with a pair of headphones. It may even be saturation on the original tape itself, so hey, whatever.

That said - many thanks for the time and effort on this one. You guys (and music) are the best.

The clutch of shows I got from marvelmike from Germany (Dusseldorf '70,'71 & 77 and Koln '76) were about the worst sounding shows I've heard, so I think you're right - I may have never heard a C tape before. That said - I found listening to those shows makes me appreciate other shows that I previously thought of as low grade SQ, as not so bad after all.
