1981 11 07 Boston University Private Interview - Boston MA 39.59 Field (oldbrownmoses-TPS-Pittylabelle)

----------------------------------------------

Interview:

Title: "Private Interview with Frank Zappa by oldbrownmoses"

Date: Saturday, 1981 11 07
Location: Case Center, Boston University, Boston, MA
Duration: 39.59 mins

----------------------------------------------

Notes from oldbrownmoses:

Would you believe that getting an interview with Frank Zappa was as straightforward
as looking at the back of Joe's Garage, Vol. I for the name of his publicist
(Wartoke Concern), dialing NYC information for their number, calling and asking for
Jane or Marv and, when connected to Marv, simply asking for the interview?
That's all it took. Plus being 16 years old. That seemed to be a big deal to them.

I mentioned that Frank was coming to Boston University on November 07, 1981 and can
I interview him?

Marv asked me for my age and told me to call back in a week after he had a chance
to run it by Frank during a scheduled call when he was playing in PA. Then he asked
me how old I was again.

That one week of waiting lasted a lifetime. When, at last, the week was up I re
dialed Wartoke Concern and asked for Marv. When I was put through Marv forgot who
I was until I mentioned that I was the 16 year old he spoke to the previous week
and then everything snapped into place. Yes, he spoke to Frank. Yes, I can interview
him before the show. I was instructed to head backstage and ask for the road manager
who would have my name on a guest list.

A week or so later I reported with my friend Dana backstage (actually, we found our
way to the recording truck outside Case Center and asked one of the 'roadies' for the
road manager. He came out and checked my name against his list. I wasn't on it.
I told him about my calls to Marv and immediately he said 'oh, you're the 16 year old kid'.
We were given a backstage pass and in we went.

After the interview I saw John Smothers and approached him with my backstage pass in hand.
"How does this work?" To which he asked " do you go to college?" I said "no" and he
replied "Good. You're too fucking stupid to go to college".

There's more, but those are the highlights.

That's a classic 'conversation' with Smothers! What a riot.

Cool that FZ did this. I was a little worried at the beginning, when after the first question about the themes behind a couple of albums, FZ says "You mean you can't tell?" I thought he might be in one of this moods where he doesn't suffer interviewers. And even though the interviewer seemed nervous (who wouldn't be, given the backstory) and got some things wrong that probably gave FZ a chuckle ("Party Rap" instead of "Panty Rap"), he actually warmed up and gave the kid adequate answers. It says a lot about FZ that he granted it, when it sounds like it was just for his (the interviewer) own curiosity about this music he loved -- not for a publication.

I also like just getting the sense of a moment in time -- backstage before a show 28 years ago. You can hear people coming in out, checking in with FZ. Pretty sure I heard John.

That must've made oldbrownmoses' day, week, or hell, year.
