Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention
Tonhalle, Dusseldorf, West Germany
December 08, 1970

~~ Combination of two unknown generation audience recordings. ~~

According to FZShows:
110 min, Aud, C
Call Any Vegetable, The Sanzini Brothers, A Pound For A Brown, Sleeping In A Jar, Porko The Magnificent (incl. There's No Business Like Show Business, I Can't Give You Anything But Love), Sharleena, Penis Dimension, Wonderful Wino, Concentration Moon, Mom & Dad, The Air, Dog Breath, Mother People, You Didn't Try To Call Me, King Kong, Who Are The Brain Police?

This version: 113:17 min, AUD, C/B-

We are pleased to present this 1970 Mothers concert from Dusseldorf back on the tracker after a 13 year absence. Despite hours and hours of work from three different Zappateers members, it should be noted however that this show will likely be considered "completest only" for most listeners.

The bulk of this seed was created using the Marvelmike/Taurus seed currently available in the Shoebox. When comparing a version of this show from Yojimbo's collection it was discovered that it contained the show introduction missing from the Taurus version but most of the show was from the same master source in slightly worse quality. However, at 10 seconds into "Mother People" to the end of the main show on the Yojimbo version, there appears to be a source change and a slight upgrade in sound quality too. So, it was decided to use this alternate source section for the tracker seed, and include the Taurus version of this section of the show in an unpatched subfolder for those who want a single source copy.

Interestingly, neither version or source contained the encore of "Who Are The Brain Police?". So, we decided to include the only know copy of this encore from the old Amnesia Vivace (AV) seed banished to "Bad Sources" for being NR'd. Normally this would be avoided, but since there was no other source available and the sound quality of the rest of the show is marginal at best, we decided to included it for completeness purposes.

Sadly the condition of the recording here was in terrible shape likely starting back with the master or 1st gen copies of the tapes themselves. This recording had it all when it comes to all that is bad: hiss, hum, drop outs, bleed through from other recordings (at times it sounds like a Tull performance bleeding through), speed & phase issues, and lots of volume variations almost as if someone (either the original taper or someone doing a transfer) tried to adjust the volume on the fly. The Taurus copy is pretty rough but the Yojimbo copy was even worse. The second tape or tape side starting after the intermission with "Wonderful Wino" is in much poorer condition than the first half of the show, and mostly unlistenable in its original state. We did our best to fix many of these issues with some success. But not all of it could be repaired.

In the Taurus Shoebox seed, there is mention of this recording being of a lossy nature. It is believed that this is due to the transfer to mini-disc phase in the lineage. For more on this and the origins of source 1 here are notes from the Taurus Shoebox seed:

"Got this and three other shows from Michael S. from Germany. He's a generous trader who had given me a pile of Alice Cooper shows and when he saw all the FZ on my list he said he had a few shows that he got from the original taper. The taper didn't do much trading, so there's a chance some of these are unique sources. The bad news is that they are all poor recordings - definitely in the C/C- range and the SA/FA looks like NR was used (levels dip @ 15K) but surely not mp3.

The following comment is from Michael S. to me in an e-mail regarding him contacting the original taper after many years....."

"So I phoned with the tape guy yesterday in the evening. He was a bit pissed off to be bothered with questions regarding his shows but at least I got him reading his notes. He transferred his oldest recordings from reel to reels (very few to cassettes, he doesn't remember which) that's up to '73. Afterwards he stored his cassettes till late '80's. Then he began transferring his tapes to digital formats. Many are on DAT now but some he didn't consider very valuable were transferred to mini-disc. All the Zappa tapes are among those. So lineage would be:

Recordings up to 1973:
reel to reel > mini-disc (reels erased or thrown away) or in the worst case: reel > cassette > mini-disc

Recordings from 1973 on:
cassette > mini-disc (cassettes erased or thrown away)

Reel recordings were most likely made with an Uher Report reel tape. Tapes were (sadly) Shamrock (lousy tapes I remember but the only ones a poor young guy could afford. BASF were great but three times as expensive). Cassettes were BASF or MAXELL bias normal. Sorry, but I couldn't get more info. He seems to be a bit, well... uninterested now... if not generally kinda out of the line, so I wouldn't swear he got it right. But it's the best info I could get. To be on the safe side maybe you could give away lineage info without guarantee of authenticity."

Despite the sound, this is a very good late 1970 Mothers performance. I am a big fan of this tour's versions of "Call Any Vegetable" with its jam oriented solo section rather the shuffle beat of the 1971 performances. The version here is excellent. "King Kong" is also a highlight with George Duke putting in an excellent effort. It will take a little for your ears to adjust, but if you like this era of Zappa the show itself will not disappoint. - Overnitefreak

(I have set the RMS level of each file to -17.8 dB by a simple volume change, except for “701208 Dusseldorf 17 Who Are the Brain Police [-180...-220]”
This file has a totally different Peak / RMS level relationship (or source???) – so I changed nothing in this regard.)

Thanks for looking into this one from the Kitchen! Not sure this is the seed to be #1 on. Laughing Wish we could have found a cleaner source. The results here should be an improvement though.

One of our 'catch phrases' at TDK is: "any version beats no version at all!" I'm happy to have helped you with your efforts which will be preserved for posterity in the TDK vault.

I collect every concert, no matter what sound quality.
But I prefer the better quality of course.

I got this show in a snail mail trade MANY years ago. My copy has 'Brain Police' on it, so I'm guessing that it's the Amnesia Vivace source listed above.

That being said, this version is a definite improvement from my old one, from 'fucking awful' to 'merely terrible'. Thanks for the upgrade!

Your copy probably is the same source as that AV seed which I believe was a reseed of an old Cheepnis Aroma seed. But that was a long time ago. I don't have it anymore so not sure if it is one of these two sources (I suspect it is) or a third source.

Glad to hear you find this an improvement! We really struggled with this one but I was determined that be documented on the tracker properly.

cheers
