Charles, (or anyone else) listening to some of these quotes as played by FZ during his guitar improvisations it strikes me that Tommy plays the changes in a way that either shows the musical telepathy he had for where Frank was going, or there was a chance in a sound check or conversation etc. to give him a hint that it might be coming, or maybe it's obvious to others while it's happening but not me... Have you or anyone else talked to Tommy about this very thing? FZ almost always played solos over model vamps that didn’t have “changes” but in many of the examples Tommy is basically playing the quoted song with the specific chord changes as opposed to playing accompaniment in the harmonic context of the vamp (Sorry if the questions not better articulated... hopefully people understand the gist of it)

I've never talked with Tommy at all. But yes, he was good at following FZ's quotations.

The example that I specifically mentioned in the lecture (#24, She's Not There in Illinois Enema Bandit, 80/06/11 early Paris) is about the ninth quotation of the same melody in that show, so it wouldn't have been too much of a surprise.

Thanks. That context makes it much more clear how that could happen. It hadn’t occurred to me that it was in a sort of “secret word” repetition context.

I always really liked Tommy doing this. And on the fly even if there was a secret word type of set up. I even liked the faux brass sound that he had which I know a lot of people hate. He could do orchestral fanfare and jazz big band that just brought the arrangements to life. (Vinnie helped too... imslow )
