I haven't read or heard many Beefheart interviews, therefore I'm wondering if Don ever specifically addressed the general creating and making of "Trout Mask Replica"? (I know he would often blurt out cryptic statements regarding certain tracks from the album during interviews)

Did Don plan out "Trout Mask" as a unified whole or as a concept album?
Has anyone ever discovered a covert subtext running through the various songs?

I think Langdon Winner once wrote an analysis of TMR stating that
Don sang each song in a particular, distinct voice...for instance,
"When Big Joan Sets Up" is sung from the vocal viewpoint of a woman, etc

Much has been written about the environment in which it was recorded and the months of rehearsing.
Apparently producer Frank Zappa wanted to record "Trout Mask" as a field recording

Though ever described as a Dadaist, I don't think Beefheart was simply making silly songs or silly albums without cohesive goals...

Did Beefheart ever elucidate his overall specific artistic and musical intentions in regard to the album?
Or is it just an unconnected clump of songs?

Don always described his fine art painting activities as a way to "turn himself inside out"
Is this how he viewed his music and (by extension) "Trout Mask Replica"?

I dont know, pushing boundaries was the thing at the time, and he could do it, and he did.

If I'm not alone . . . How long have I been asleep?

There is a lot in the John French book, Beefheart:Through The Eyes of Magic about both the writing and making of TMR

Chords that vibrate sweetest pleasure,
Thrill the deepest notes of wo.
