I'm listening now to the cd of The Grand Wazoo (with the title track appearing first). Can anyone explain to me any musical value in the track?
The rest of the album I love, (and Waka and Rats) but this track just leaves me totally confused.
Help needed, or am I a lost cause?

I think Frank would say that no explanation is necessary - either you get it or you don't.

Itís called avant-garde. Just enjoy it and have the free drinks at the reception.

(I have those same problems with Approximate.)

There's nothing "avant-garde" about that track - it may be intricate but it's just straightforward big-band shuffle.

So, yeah, probably a lost cause.

Yes. Unless he's confusing it with "For Calvin" maybe?

Well, in todayís iTunes world any 13 minute tune is avant-garde.

Approximate, then? Itís on my favorite live album. And I know all the back ground there. And the banter part is funny.

I like Grand Wazoo (song) better than most of the material the Wazoo band played. I just let it play through as there are no personal top 20 Zappa songs here. Maybe Eat That Question. But this is one of them albums I never picked anything to compile. Itís fine. Iíll take almost anything instrumental to some level. Least favorites: too much synthesizer and drum solos. And Iíve sat thru 2 Neil Peart solos live. Very Happy Very Happy

The little bits of synth George Duke played are fine as are the tiny bits in Wazoo.

"Avant-garde" is not a synonym for "non-commercial".

The problem here might be that itís too conventional for him. The other two albums mentioned are what we think of as Zappa material, with some of his usual distinctive elements. I did play through the album and the track itself twice. It mostly resembles jazz you might hear on those FM stations that have a couple of hours of jazz. But it does have distinctive melodies. Also, Zappa plays the bluesy guitar parts he sometimes used, and is not really distinguished here from most guitarists of that era.

The tempo is rather on the lazy side, with the bluesy effect.

But to each his own. Bohemian, do not buy the other Wazoo album (two discs). It is more of the same.

Not really, and why would you suggest that when the OP has already mentioned
