I've always been under the impression that our man Don was a nature and animal lover...
so why does his most famous album cover feature a photo of him wearing what
looks like an animal pelt? Looks like stylish fox fur to me...or more likely, bunny rabbit fur

Does anybody know if Beefheart is wearing real fur or harmless fake fur?

Even if real fur was acceptable in 1969, I still find it incongruent that the same
man who (supposedly) dispatched a tree surgeon to save trees from the harsh
sound waves of Trout Mask Replica (being rehearsed)
would pose in a deceased bunch of fuzzy animal fur
on the album's cover

Surely someone's researched the TMR cover enough to have
collected some details about Don's worriesome plush fur

But, wait, the fur thickens! --

What appeared to be simply a short fur vest
is actually an elaborate fur embellishment of an
entire long coat

Yes...definitely looks like real fur...but even if it's late 1960s FAKE FUR,
why would Beefheart wear whole big wads of realistic fake animal fur?...it doesn't make sense!

Is it really animal fur? Fake fur? Mock fur? - is it not fur?

An old skin is not a threat to the environment. A new plastic fake fur is.

Disadvantages of fake fur:

- Fake fur is not as insulating and does not allow the skin to breathe as much as real fur.
- Fake fur is made from various materials including blends of acrylic and modacrylic polymers derived from coal, air, water, petroleum and limestone. These synthetic materials can take a long time to break down, possibly anywhere from 500 to 1,000 years.
- Fake furs are not able to keep snow from melting and re-freezing on the fiber filaments; this is very important, especially in hiking, mountain climbing, skiing and other outdoor activities which are done in extreme conditions.

Captain Beefheart was right on with the old ratty fur!

Does it matter?
Even if it IS real fur it's about 50 years too late for the animal...

I wouldn’t be looking for a rational explanation.

word to this.

on another note (this might be unpopular) but I don't think either don or fz had the activist spirit to think "I feel politically this way about this, so I should live this way"...I think they were both too smart for lifestylism like that. FZ for example had what I think is one of the best most sincere concerns for the ecological crisis in alla rock, and in the joe's garage liner notes makes a very ironic note on the way that rock stars like him were complicit in that ecological crisis---but he didn't exactly *change* what he was doing. he did music for costeau etc instead...not a criticism of either, just something I've been thinking about. hard to imagine the kid who yelled at his mom "Sue, get me a pepsi!" would write "Who Do You Think You're Fooling?" or "Nowadays A Woman's Gotta Hit A Man".
