A brief explanation about this Shoebox series. A few months ago koolstrike got in touch with me saying that a taper friend had sent him masterclones of the four U.K. 1988 shows, and he had the idea of presenting them here on the anniversaries of the shows. After listening to them, it seemed to me like a good idea.

The taper had believed these sources were never shared. Comparing Brighton with versions we have had on the tracker, I found that from audience chat and other sound quality quirks it seemed to be a source we have heard. The taper discusses this a bit in the notes included with this seed. However, these sources sound as good as any 1988 audience tape you're likely to hear, and in reviewing these Flambay mentioned that none of the four shows needed speed correction, which seems to me like a good sign.

For now I am presenting these files as they were sent to me, except that I converted them from Apple Lossless to FLAC and corrected most of the titles. If there is interest, we can do patched, tracking-corrected FZShows versions in the future. I hope this series is fun for people who were at the shows and all fans of the 1988 tour.

Excerpt from taper's notes:
Quote:

Technical lineage: Sony ECM 939LT Electret Condenser Microphone with Sony Professional. TDK MAX C90 cassettes. Analogue to digital: Nakamichi BX100E (massive regret I was not the "mother of dragons"!!) to Marantz CD recorder DR 6000. This recording is uploaded from a first generation CD copy so technically speaking is a third generation recording. The master tapes have not been played for many years but are still safe.

I found that the BengoFury and BobM sources are the same as this one. However, the BengoFury required speed correction and the BobM is another Shoebox seed that has not been speed checked. The other two sources on FZShows (Drew51 and TOGFIADO) are different.

Possibly of note is that the BobM has a cut at the end of Yuppies while this copy and Bengo's do not, making me wonder if the latter two copies had patches from one of those other two sources.

Flambay did mention concerns about "a signal response drop in the 18-20 kHz range" indicating possible lossiness. I don't know if this could have come from the taping and conversion setup mentioned above by the taper. I apologize for not mentioning this in the original post and hope that this is still worth the download.

This is perfectly consistent with the mic that was used whilst being what I would consider to be a lossless recording. I googled its specs:

Frequency Response: 50-18000 Hz

(http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=134679.0, actually this relates to a similar Sony mic)

Not great by modern and high end gear standards but hey it was 30 years ago. I bought a Sony mic in the '90s with the same range (it looked just like a Telefunken). Thanks for the upload.
