Gary Lucas has reported on Facebook that Jeff Cotton has passed away the 6th because of cancer.

He was a great guitar player and, if you have read John French's excellent memoir, he was the one that came out damaged the most from the Trout Mask House. That thing always made me sad.

A good day to play the Plain Brown Wrapper sessions, "Strictly Personal" and "Trout Mask Replica".

So strange. MU popped into my head yesterday and I listened to my fave tracks (that feature Jeff at his best, of course.)
One of the handful of guitarists that have provided me nothing but JOY over most of my lifetime.

RIP and condolences to his family & friends if they are reading this.

Sad news indeed. His contribution to Strictly Personal, Trout Mask Replica and Mirror Man will remain legendary ...

He's on one of my three favorite rock LPs. Trout Mask Replica has impressed me so much that I'm on the search all the time for what I like to call "post-Beefheart" music/avantpunk. Plus I still think the vibe on that album could be really fruitful for the world of free improv & out jazz - that's been keeping my mind busy for years and years and will do so in future. Thanks for the music!

edit:
I recognise that, after the update below, I don't need to change a single word in my post above. Smile
Best wishes to the man!

Reading some reports (including from Steve Feigenbaum on Progressive Ears who I trust) that Cotton is in fact alive - according to Feigenbaum it was Cotton's wife who passed away.

Thanks for this pbuzby!

And yes, I was also intentionally upset today, but Wikipedia is always pretty fast there so we can be pretty sure this so called news luckily is not true."

Also, at some point in this interview with Bill Harkleroad I watched a few months ago, when Andreyev asks him if he has had any recent contact with Cotton, Bill mentions that he had and that he was sad to learn that his (Cotton's) wife was very sick. So that gives some credence to it actually being his wife that had pased .

This is crazy! I'm sure Jeff wishes he was the one to go, so condolences again.

PS where did that photo come from, baz'? Is that really him (at the most) 70?

I just googled pictures of him ... there are not many of him ...

It's not him. The pic is of a fellow named Larry Hosford (who DID pass away 11/26/2016)

Now I will have to give him a listen.

I have modified the thread title since it is seeming likely that the report of Jeff Cotton's death was false.
