I bet three to one that you have a negative Side 4, a white label and a messed up Libretto - if you have the EU version! Wink

Schrödinger's album: the etching is simultaneously positive and negative.

a brief moment to reflect on...

Halloween 77 costume box: wrong track to replace
Absolutely Free 50th: side 4 wrong laser etching (US & EU) + wrong booklet (EU)
Lumpy Gravy Primordial: RSD black friday 2017, canceled

what's going on?

It's all terribly inadmissible, not what we're used to.

Frank I miss you!

It's an industry, manufacturing thing as far as 2 of the above go. It's strained. Delays (and mistakes) are the norm. I can't find it now, but there was a recent article about the backlog on cassette manufacture. In high demand, and cannot be met.

You are right.
I work for a company in a market where, if we made these mistakes and have these delays, we would lose all clients and shut-off. I'm sure most of you do.
Music industry has found its way to make business with no need to achieve a reasonable client satisfaction.
In this respect, Frank was actually far ahead either when touring or producing.

Reading this thread this morning has made me feel a bit depressed..... What started out as an attempt by Joe to give the fans something different and a bit special has ended up annoying some of the most loyal of them....
By going ''outside the norm'' with this laser etching idea they've ended up employing a company that - for whatever reason - couldn't handle it...
I just hope that this experience doesn't stop the ZFT/Joe bothering with these creative ideas in the future..

As mentioned in the two posts above, the music industry is now one where sloppiness is the norm... Unfortunately I don't think it's just the music industry... It seems the one thing the whole World agrees on is: ''Economic growth is good!''.. but this just leads to mad out-of-control greed by the bosses and the inevitable corner-cutting... (to say nothing about the head-in-the-sand plundering of finite resources and exploitation of cheap imported labour..), Ok, Rant over. I'll go back to thanking God that I have strawberries in December and a nice, cheap sandalwood smelling Prius picking me up and taking me to a non tax-paying coffee shop...

So that's weird!

The Laser Etching & The Label:

"Note: We advise pressing a laser etched record with a label on both sides. Pressing a record without labels or with only one label may result in undesired warping or "pull-thru" on the center hole".

Any enigma is easy once you know the answer...

Yes, I found that already out on page 6 ... Wink

Pallas, the pressing plant which pressed all the ZFT albums:

No matter if regular record or even Picture LPs: The labels are pressed directly with the hot vinyl and are technically indispensable.

I've got a Jethro Tull record with a nice laser etching on side 4. It's pristine and has no stupid label on it. However I believe it has good old paper labels on side 1-3. Not at home ATM so cannot check further...

If the laser etching had been so? with and without lead-out groove

So, we've established that the laser etching is not suitable for full-faced images but using a white or dark gray label is no doubt a stupid mistake.
Maybe black labels are unobtainable?

If the labels are needed the graphic project must be tackled in a different way, don't you think?

I think Pallas should have better warned ZFT that their concept for Side 4 would have been screwed by their pressing procedure as above, instead of going ahead with the pressing.
I'm sure ZFT would have proposed an alternative picture better fitting with the label (refer to pappazappa's post for a smart one) and also the design of an appropriate custom label, to fill the blank.
