It's amazing how new tapes keep surfacing even after all this time. This show wasn't known at all to have been recorded before it premiered on Youtube (!) last November. Thanks to the generosity of Audience Tape Guy, we now have a lossless high quality rip coming from the original master cassette. It's a mono recording but, then, most of the audience tapes from the era are. Tape speed was found to be correct, so all I had to do was track the original file and convert it into flac. Sound quality is very pleasant, definitely above average for an audience tape of the 70s! This is where Tom Fowler, apparently, broke his hand during the tour and had to be replaced for two weeks; however, he plays on this show, so the injury must have happened after the concert or the next day. Or, although unlikely, he may have tried to perform here with a broken hand!!

The concert is short but quite sweet. The setlist doesn't have any particular deviation from the norm but Frank's playing is throughout inspired, reaching a peak on "RDNZL", "Penguin in Bondage" and "Pygmy Twylyte". There is also a quite sweet Duke solo on "RDNZL" and a percussion extended version of "T'Mershi Duween". You gotta love the guys who keep yelling for "Dinah-Moe Humm" even while the song is being played! By the way, the 1974 versions of the tune were definitely the best: what a beast of a groove! The fact that this is also a very good sounding audience recording make this tape a very worth addition to the collection of those who love this era: this period is probably my favorite of FZ's career, so you already know I am a fan of this!

Thanks to Doc West of 963XKE for taping!
Thanks to Audience Tape Guy for collecting the tape, transferring it and sharing it with us!
Thanks to Flambay for assistance!

Enjoy !!

x2 with knobs on. Unbelievable that it's taken so long to surface. Says the man who (through ignorance of the tape trading network (and before I discovered Zappateers) and a sense of professional duty) held onto the only sbd from the 88 tour for over 20 years! Pales into insignificance compared to 43 years. Hopefully there'll be another record breaker soon. Thanks ATG for sharing this gem (& Galeans for doing the nitty gritty). Your work is loved.
