From Amazon: This Vaulternative Records concert release finds Zappa & band at the Uptown Theater, Chicago, Ill - September 29, 1978. Of the two shows played that evening, the late show is captured here in its entirety. As you would expect, the concert delivers with a good blend of fan favorites, blistering guitar solos, audience participation, on-the-spot improvisations and stellar playing from a talented band line-up.

I wonder if Frank paid union dues for this show unlike the time he refused to do so in Fall 1980 at the same venue. But of course there may have been different rules in 1978.

If he used the portable four-track in 1978 but wanted a more professional recording setup in 1980, that might have made a difference.

My copy has arrived.

So there, MusicToday! Those of us living in western Canada used to get our FZ CDs two weeks after people in the eastern US or northern Europe.

No, but I wasn't expecting it.

I received a couple of notifications from amazon.ca, first that Chicago '78 would be delayed and later that Meat Light and Little Dots would be delayed and I could cancel my order if I wanted. (I didn't.) Then yesterday I received notification that the estimated delivery date for Chicago '78 was Wednesday, October 26.

That estimate was accurate.

I found this quote from Chicago Tribune: Nov. 22, 1978 . Page 16:

"Frank Zappa, however, has come up- with an even more worthy scheme: He fines any member of his band who plays more than 96 notes per solo. Each extra note is tapped. Zappa isn't saying how much the fine is, but he did tell a friend that his lead guitar player owes him $350. How does he keep track? 'I've got a guy offstage who counts."

Very Happy

Chicago comes in digisleeve package like FZ:OZ, Buffalo, Philly? Or jewel case?

Peter Wolf and Tommy Mars must have paid some huge fines.

Yes, complete with map and endangered species.

Paroxysmal Splendor (7:14) is spelled correctly on the back cover (unlike the press release). It's a suite of sorts, containing parts of three songs (one not previously known to have been performed on stage until 1984!) and one instrumental (not listed on the cover, and I'll need to listen a second time to identify it).

You can read the liner notes (albeit without the typo in the second occurrence of Lanny Waggoner's given name) on Avo's website.

A present? For me?

The press release mentioned I'm a Beautiful Guy - could that be it?

I came across a German site that had the track times, so for those who are interested, here they are:

CD 1 (total time: 52:55)
01 Chicago Walk-on 1:20
02 Twenty-one 8:26
03 Dancin' Fool 3:30
04 Easy Meat 5:42
05 Honey, Don't You Want A Man Like Me? 4:22
06 Keep It Greasy 3:41
07 Village Of The Sun 9:15
08 The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing 3:30
09 Bamboozled By Love 8:32
10 Sy Borg 4:37

CD 2 (total time: 66:59)
01 Little House I Used To Live In 9:38
02 Paroxysmal Splendor 7:14
03 Yo Mama 12:28
04 Magic Fingers 2:37
05 Don't Eat The Yellow Snow 18:36
06 Strictly Genteel 8:25
07 Black Napkins 8:01
