The more I look to the setlist, the more I want to listen to it. I very much look forward to this! There are so many intriguing titles on CD 3!

I wonder if one of these is the early version of "Envelopes" that was recorded in 1968. Frank talked about it in the program notes of the LSO performance.

Quote:
The first version of ENVELOPES was written for two amplified keyboard instruments with rhythm section accompaniment, and an attempt was made to record it at Trident Studios in London in 1968. The performance was not good enough and was never released

cheers

In 1977 FZ introduced "Envelopes" as something written in "1969 or 70". Zappa and the then-new Mothers were also in Trident Studios in June 1970 to cut "Sharleena", so it could also be that FZ attempted to record "Envelopes" with the line-up of Duke, Underwood, Simmons and Dunbar. If the MOI ever visited the Trident Studios in 1968, then I'd expect it would've been the Autumn '68 Euro tour, specifically close to the Ahead of Their Time concert. By which time Uncle Meat would've been completely wrapped up months ago.

I wonder if the lost Chunga's Revenge with more Hot Rats band stuff as well as the Trident "Wino Man" will be a future P/O thing? Maybe then if "Envelopes" was first in fact attempted in June 1970, maybe that could be included as a historical curio.

Does this invitation also apply to Joe? Just because I want to be clear on your request.

31 Dog Breath (instrumental) 2:51
32 The Dog Breath Variations (mix Outtake) 1:47

The whole of CD 2, plus at least the first 11 tracks of CD 3, appears to be an alternate sequence of Uncle Meat. I had thought upon first glance that it might be a 3-LP version Frank had mentioned in an interview, but it can't be - this sequence is 78 minutes long, only a couple minutes longer than the released version.

All the titles that are on the official Uncle Meat are also on the alternate version, in some form. Almost all the track times match very closely. At a guess, King Kong lacks the final section, from the Miami Pop Festival, and 'Ere Ian Whips It... lacks the section of Ian actually whipping it out. Uncle Meat: Main Title Theme is about 30 seconds shorter on the alternate version, and Dog Breath, In the Year of the Plague is a minute shorter. We Can Shoot You lost 30 seconds somewhere when it got split in two. All this would be consistent with the Uncle Meat demo acetate here on the tracker, though the sequencing on the demo seems jumbled.

These are the tracks on the alternate version that weren't on the official Uncle Meat:

CD 2, 04 Whiskey Wah 1:35
CD 2, 08 Shoot You Percussion Item 1:28
CD 2, 09 The Whip 5:04
CD 2, 18 Cops & Buns 5:57
CD 3, 03 Poo Yeahrg 0:32

Judging by the demo acetate, Poo Yeahrg seems to be just a little hand-signalled vocal tomfoolery, akin to Right There. Cops & Buns is much longer than the Lost Episodes version, or even the version on the demo. The other three remain mysteries for just a little while longer.

The closing electronic section is 28 seconds. I forget, is that on the demo?

Nope, it segues into "Our Bizzarre Relationship". It should be noted that, on the Zappateers seed, the track is mislisted as "The Uncle Meat Variations".

cheers

Some zappa.com and Hoffman forum members have received the disc.

From what they have posted...disc two and disc three tracks 1-11 are billed as "original sequence." Cops & Buns does indeed have FZ and the cop talking twice as long as in previous circulating versions. I haven't read anyone confirming what Whiskey Wah or The Whip are yet.

Basically two out of three discs have about the same content?
