Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
Concertgebouw,
Amsterdam,
Netherlands

1974 06 22

This copy: 48.58 min, FM, A- LOSSY

Lineage: Original tapes -> Early 2000s broadcast -> ??? -> MP3 (320 kbps) -> Soundforge (slight volume adjustments) -> FLAC

Taped and transferred by: ???
First seed by: Adstang
File rescue by: James66175
Edited by: Galeans

Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart): vocals, harmonica
Dean Smith: guitar
Fuzzy Fuscaldo: guitar
Paul Uhrig: bass
Michael Smotherman: keyboards, vocals
Del Simmons: clarinet, saxophone, oboe, flute
Ty Grimes: drums

Setlist:

01 Keep On Rubbin' [10:31]
02 Sweet Georgia Brown [06:32]
03 This is the Day [05:33]
04 Abba Zaba [03:21]
05 Band Introductions [01:19]
06 Peaches [09:27]
07 Who'll Be The Next [12:15]

Michael Smotherman: We were in Holland playing this beautiful opera house. We had a walk up two storeys to get to the dressing room. All the way up there Don was just saying regular things like, "I hope they've got cheese in the dressing room, I'm kind of hungry," and, "Later on tonight maybe we can all go out and get a hamburger." Then we get on the top of the stairs and see all of these reporters and all of a sudden he'd become Captain Beefheart and he goes, "Er, excuse me, Michael, I have to go and meditate and levitate in my dressing room for a few minutes before the performance." He could turn that on and you'd see all these reporters go, "Ooh, aaah, Don is going to levitate!" He reminds me of W. C. Fields: irascable and basically just putting the whole world on and having a laugh up his sleeve about it.

Adstang: Recorded the same day as Don appeared on the Dutch television show 'Van Oekel's Discohoek'.

This is another show that, apparently, has only been made available in an MP3 sourced version taken from a rebroadcast of the show made in the early 2000s. To make things worse, it also seems to have been carelessly noise reduced. A shame because the tape itself doesn't sound half bad, with a nice stereo separation. It was first seeded as a set of mp3 files (that have been circulating in the net) by user Adstang, but the seed was quickly banned. Me and JWB discussed it and we decided to still present this, with hope that, sooner or later, this seed will be obsolete.

Even though this is one of the finest sounding tapes of the era, this is not a great show. However, I always thought (and still think ) that it was unfair to call this incarnation The Tragic Band. The Captain is obviously not in his finest form. Smotherman recently complained about his harmonica playing and listening to his solos in this tour, we can't really disagree with him: all the power that he used to have on that instrument has gone and he only plays feeble high noises. His singing was somewhat better, but this show is also marred by technical problems, probably caused by Don yelling too much into the microphone. I think the guys in the band, even though didn't got Captain Beefheart's music or art, did the best they could to put on a professional gig: they were hardly 'tragic' players. It's always easy to blame on someone else when one of our beloved artists fails, but I think this tour was not up to standards because of the repertoire (which wasn't the band's fault) and the Captain not being himself. However, luckily, he came back as strong as before just in a matter of time!

Thanks to Adstang for the original seed!
Thanks to James66175 for providing us the original files!
Artwork included on the original torrent also included in this seed!

Enjoy !!

Thanks for sharing this!!

Something weird is going on, though: above, it says that there are 12 seeders, but I remain stuck at 0.0%, with uTorrent telling me that I am connected to 0(0) Seeds and 0(14) Peers.

This, indeed, is the day.............

As one of the two current seeders, I can say that I have all the correct files. I've just double checked by listening to Sweet Georgia Brown.

Yes, although I'm no expert I would say that if Houseworker seeded to you and you have 100% completed (which your profile says you have) then it's IMPOSSIBLE for you to have anything different to him.

FOB. Smile

It may be significant that the other current seeder haiarts only shows as having downloaded 207MB (rather than the full 263MB). Perhaps they're offering a corrupted version?

Long shot, I know.

Yes, probably not.... If you hover your cursor over the 370Mb in haiarts ''up'' column you'll see his ''current upload'' is zero...whereas yours is 209Mb.... although this might also look as if stupidbluesuit93 has only downloaded that amount I would say he got the rest from an unlogged in member... I don't think he can go in the completed list unless all ffp's etc. match (If he doesn't DL everything - by choice or for any other reason - he stays as a leecher)........

Yeah, I changed that because I was talking even more rubbish that usual (I got mixed up with haiarts and stupidbluesuit93..... it was the former who seems to have DL 207, we don't know how much the latter DL'd because he's logged off) I'd already edited that bit of irrelevance out..

The only thing I can think of is he may have skipped about when listening and thought he had 2 of 'those' and none of 'these', when in actual fact he's got the right tracks... Maybe he'll come back and we can ask him....

He briefly showed up as seeding this. He'd downloaded 263MB, so yes, he's got the right tracks.
