Samples from 5 versions

Our current FZ Shows version of this show
1988 03 25 Uniondale NY 154.04 AUD MC (PvL-walk) from cdrs - seeded 2005-10-26
sounds great (A/A-)

but it needs to be revisited:
- speed correction in the -20cts range
- tape flips cuts and other gaps need to be patched with alternate source material where available.

Here's a selection of samples from 5 different versions
for easy comparison
and for discussion about which combination (main source, patches) to choose
for a new FZ Shows upload:

The versions presented here:

1) PvL-walk AUD MC, currently in FZ Shows

2) DATHeads AUD MC, seeded at DIME in 2010
same source as PvL-walk, missing Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk and all Encores

3) muzzard67 AUD, seeded at DIME in 2008
alternate source, missing Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk

4) fzmoi69-doctorzap AUD MC, seeded to the Shoebox in 2011 (torrent lost)
same source as 1) and 2) but more 'mono', different transfer ? dubline ?

5) robsam-doctorzap AUD 1st, seeded to the Shoebox in 2011 (torrent lost)
alternate source, same as muzzard67 or different ?

The samples (from each version):

01 start tape (Intro to The Black Page)
- check each version here to help determine AUD source similarities or differences

02 When The Lie's So Big
- tf cut near start of song (PvL-walk, DATheads, fzmoi69-drzap)
- no cut (in other versions)

03 Pound For A Brown (sax-keyboard-drum solo portion)
- cut between sax solo and keyboard solo (PvL-walk, DATheads) - no cut in fzmoi69-drzap
- drop out or cut in drum solo (PvL-walk, DATheads, fzmoi69-drzap)
- no cuts (muzzard67, robsam-drzap)

Are there any other good or better sounding versions from this show
we should look into as well ?

Or a CD-R step free transfer of the PvL-walk/DATheads AUD MC source ?

Thanks for letting us know.

Otherwise I believe that we should carry on with the PvL-walk copy as main source.

Thanks for checking these samples
and for helping find the best sounding combo of sources
for our new FZ Shows upload project around this essential 1988 show.

I think that we can rule out the two DIME versions presented here:

The DATheads version is identical with the Pvl-walk version,
and the muzzard67 version sounds like a higher gen and inferior sounding copy
of the robsam version.

...

Maybe the same tape flip cuts in fzmoi69's copy and in PvL-walk's are pure coincidence after all.

I'm hearing different audience noise at the start of the tape
when comparing the fzmoi69 and the PvL-walk copy,
so at least there we should be listening at different sources.

Let's assume then, that we are indeed having three different sources for this show here:
(check the different audience shouts when FZ says "Hey ! ... Welcome to the program tonight folks ...")

#1 - the PvL-walk AUD MC (A/A- stereo) (= DATheads on DIME)

#2 - the fzmoi69-doctorzap AUD MC (A- mono)

#3 - the robsam-doctorzap AUD 1st gen (A-/B+ stereo), already patched to completeness with fzmoi69 source material
(muzzard67's DIME seed is a higher gen copy of this source).

IMO each of these sources should appear in FZ Shows.

As we would have to downsample it anyway when preparing it for FZ Shows,
I wonder in what way the hi res original might be sounding superior to the version
you have already downsampled for your Shoebox upload.

Wanna seed it to the Shoebox for those interested to compare ? Thanks.
