This is NOT another thread about the various editions of albums
and their special edits, re-masterings, re-mixings, errors etc. etc.

Many of these facts are already well known:
1. The 2004 Zappa CD Rundown: http://www.lukpac.org/~handmade/patio/vinylvscds/2004cdrundown.html
2. The Frank Zappa Album Versions Guide: http://www.lukpac.org/~handmade/patio/vinylvscds/

It's my personal list of the best possible digital "Original Album Version" available by now.

Amendments are welcome!
Wink

Release notes:
Source: 1993 1630 Digital Master.
Digital re-edit by FZ & Spence Chrislu 1993.

Part One: 15:49 Part Two: 15:55
The mix of the old Ryko 1995 version and (sadly) this new transver of the 2012 version
lapses into MONO from approximately 01:48 to just after 03:31 on part 1.
Despite the MONO section in the 1995 and 2012 version, the sound quality is much better
and more accurate to the original LP than the 1986 version, which has added digital reverb
and sections in fake stereo.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

03 B. Lumpy Gravy
Edition: Rykodisc, 1986 CD
Label / Cat.-No.: Rykodisc / RCD 40024
Release date: 1986-09-00

Only the section with the correct stereo image from about 01:48 to around 03:31.

Despite the mono section in the 1995 version of "Lumpy Gravy", the sound quality is much better and more accurate to the original LP than the 1986 version, which has added digital reverb and sections in fake stereo.

An ideal solution would be to edit in the stereo section from the 1986 CD into the 1995 version. Luckily there is no digital reverb applied to this section!

Thank you very much for your tip-off, benw20!

I will edit an "ideal CD version" by myself soon, so stay tuned! A download link will follow here ...

Anyway, as described by me in the "Reissues Coming..............." thread before, I think this problem was sadly overlooked by Joe Travers.

Yes, "we all make mistakes". Wink

Agreed, the 1986 CD can hardly be considered the best possible version of Lumpy Gravy.

Thanks for your reply, but benw20 has said that in the 1995 version the sound quality is much better and more accurate to the 1986 version,
which has added digital reverb and sections in fake stereo.

It's just the short "mono section" of the 1986 version which has the correct stereo image.

Yes, that's why I said the 1986 version can't be considered the best possible version (although it is listed as such in your original post).

Without the 1995 Ryko CD audio error: from about 01:48 to around 03:31 in mono.

The most perfect "Lumpy Gravy Project"!

The mix of the old Ryko 1995 version and (sadly) the new transfer of the 2012 version
lapses into MONO from approximately 01:48 to just after 03:31 on part 1.

I think this problem was simply overlooked by Joe Travers for the new 2012 version,
which is basically the same master as the 1995 Ryko version.

The first Ryko 1986 CD is the only CD version that has the correct stereo image on this section.

Despite the MONO section in the 1995 and 2012 version, the sound quality is much better and more
accurate to the original LP than the 1986 version, which has added digital reverb and sections in fake stereo.

So, an ideal solution was to edit in the stereo section from the 1986 CD into the 2012 version.
Luckily there is no digital reverb applied to this section!

If anybody is interested in the re-edited version, please send me a PM.

Listening to it right now and it's a beauty. I have two other versions of this album, but this one is now my favorite.
Thanks again Pittylabelle. Very Happy

Thanks for the work on this !

I already have the Ryko 2 on 1, the reissue & Lumpy Money, with the new release a pending purchase so I don't feel guilty Smile

The original "Them Or Us" CD sounds great. I wonder what the reissue will sound like.

I disagree, that's one that has always annoyed me - it has the "deadest" sound I've ever heard on a live recording. I've never heard the vinyl, but a new master of that one could mean a significant improvement.

I think it's the mix, because not all songs sound dead. Whippin Post sounds more alive than Be In My Video for example. This one would need a remix, I think.

Only the title track, the "Marqueson's" guitar solo and perhaps a few bits in other songs are entirely live. Most have the drums and other stuff redone in the studio. A few cuts like "Be In My Video" are entirely from the studio.
