I still remember the first time I listened to FZ's RDNZL solo here, and I proceeded to melt. It's the combination of the mix, and the sheer madness of this solo. I still get chills thinking about it.

If he kept his level down on stage (because he was nervous for example) or it was a big room, or any one of a number of other reasons, he would have to be 'pushed' in the main PA mix. May even have had no amp onstage (I've done several tours where the bass was only DIed to keep the levels under more control). It's down to the nature of the waveform (long), and room acoustics. Same reason the keys are often hot in the mix in a lot of late 70's SBDs.
