Frank Zappa &
The Mothers Of Invention
Civic Center Arena
St Paul, MN

1974 11 27

~~ Dick Barber SBD ~~

Samples from these 4 versions (In alphabetical order):

1) EasyEd-ZappaPenguin 1st gen SBD
http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=15947 (full FZ Shows seed)

2) fzmoi69-doctorzap 2nd gen SBD
http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=21492 (full Shoebox seed,
entire version running at correct speed as is)

3) robsam-doctorzap 2nd gen SBD
not seeded yet
samples upped here for comparison to the other three versions

4) Yojimbo-Jon~Fin Master Clone (?) CD-R from SBD (EAC rip)
http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=7928 (full FZ Shows seed)

Current FZshows entry:

1974 11 27 - Civic Center Arena, St Paul, MN
125 min, SBD, A/A-

Tush Tush Tush, Stinkfoot (q: Big Swifty, Whipping Post), RDNZL, Village Of The Sun (q: Streets Of Cairo), Echidna's Arf, Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?,
Penguin In Bondage, T'Mershi Duween, Dog Meat, Building A Girl, Dinah-Moe Humm, Camarillo Brillo, Montana,
The Booger Man (q: Star Trek Theme), improvisations (q: Zoot Allures), Oh No, Trouble Every Day (q: Rikki Don't Lose That Number)

Samples (of each version)
taken from these portions:

02 Stink Foot (begin FZ Solo)
06 Echidna's Arf > DYEWTT (around Master tf 1)
12 Dinah Moe Humm (around Master tf 2)
21 Rikki Trouble (end of tape)

All four versions are having the same (tape flip) cuts
and similar tape flaws around these cuts.

Both the Catalogue and FZshows are rating this SBD version A/A-.
Personally I'd go for an A- at best for either of these versions,
each having its fair share of distortion in the louder parts and
some audible tape flaw spots, especially near the master tape flip cuts.

Any opinion as to which of them would be the most natural and pleasant enough sounding version
to be considered our definitive version for FZ Shows (speed corrected & patched).

Is there possibly any other 'cleaner' sounding (A/A-) version of this SBD source available to compare against ?

Is it worth having either of the doctorzap DR-1 transfers (fzmoi69 or robsam version) up in FZ Shows,
either as a replacement to our current FZ Shows seeds,
or alongside, as a co-existing FZ Shows seed ?

Thanks for checking these samples and for speaking up.

All the recordings are mono, with just differing (transfer?) phase shifts giving a pseudo-stereo effect at the expense of high frequencies and dynamic clarity.

The Yojimbo sounds best IMHO, with different opposite phase shift to the others that maybe indicates a different and/or earlier Gen. transfer. I corrected the phase shift and then tried r-channel mono only, the latter sounding better.

I did try to attach this as a file without success, so do contact me if you want to hear the result.

Best Regards...TomP

Thanks Tom for looking into this.

I'd suggest to post a new samples torrent.

You cannot attach sound files in a current thread.

I think we might need some fa/sa analysis

to lend a hand and to detect any eq or other processing

Good idea.

Here's a comparative FA from the 02 Stink Foot sample (first 10 secs of FZ solo)
EasyEd - blue line
Yojimbo - green line/dark line
fzmoi69-doctorzap - magenta line
robsam-doctorzap - orange line

All versions looking nearly identical here,
except for the Yojimbo which drops off in the upper 1000 Hz.

FA from 12 Dinah Moe sample (first 7 secs from song reprise)
same color attributions as above

Here we're seeing more difference between each version:

1) Create samples, encode each of them to flac, put them in a folder (aptly named),
create a .torrent file from that folder (as you would do for upload to any tracker)

2) Go to Samples & Fills
Click New Topic,
write Subject title,
write description of your Samples upload in "Message body".
In "Add an attachment" Browse for your .torrent file (Filename)

then "Preview" to check or to edit your post,
or "Submit" to upload that torrent.

You will then be prompted to download that torrent again (includes now your passkey
to be recognized by the tracker).

Use that newly downloaded torrent file to start your upload with your usual torrent client
(utorrent, Vuze, Transmission, ...).

For me, the RobSam version gets the nod.

Of the two Doctorzap transfers I prefer the Robsam. However, I seem to be leaning toward the Yojimbo version, though I occasionally change my mind back to Robsam. Guess I'll have to listen to Tomp's new samples next.

OK, thanks all for your feedback.

I will then proceed with a phase corrected version
of the robsam-doctorzap 2nd gen SBD
including patches from the J.S.-doctorzap AUD MC
for FZ Shows
