SBD/AUD (Robsam-doctorzap-fzmoi69-mudsharky-pbuzby-flambay-mudsharknyc)

This FZ Shows entry provides an essential SBD source upgrade from any previous FZ Shows version, to date, while merging another 2 audience sources to complete the concert. This show is a fun listen and captures FZ & the 1984 Touring Band approximately 5 weeks into the first leg of their North American 20th Anniversary touring schedule. They are definitely having a good time on stage during the evenings twilight hour. Heck, some of the band were seemingly trapped in the twilight hour as well as they manage to mess up more than once during the setlist but prominently at one point, where FZ stops the show! What ensues is a quite entertaining correction ceremony to the tune of “No that’s not right. That is not right. That is absolutely not correct. Look at that piece of paper in front of you. No, cancel on that, that is totally incorrect. Okay, let’s do it right, take it from…” and then he stops the band again “No, give ‘em the right chord, give ‘em the right chord. Alright now do it right…..” This stoppage occurs at the segue point coming out of “He’s So Gay” where the band is supposed to go into “Honey Don’t You Want A Man Like Me” but some of the band goes into “Bobby Brown” as if they were on some kind of one way twilight zone auto-pilot. And it’s not the first time they mess up during the show, however by this point FZ puts ‘em in check and stops the show!

A great example of fine musicianship & miraculous performance here definitely goes to Chad Wackerman whose skill & utmost awareness amazingly keeps the band out of as much trouble as possible. Chad makes no mistakes but doesn’t allow any train wrecks either, other than where FZ stops the show. Chad’s seamless shape-shifting rhythmic abilities truly saves the day in previous spots where the band clearly messes up. I would say the first notable big mess up (there are others) occurs at the very beginning of “Trouble Every Day”, but the pure rhythmical genius of drumming overcomes. May as well been introduced as Chad Wackerman, MD for this show. Could the band have been extra nervous performing for the filming crew, could it have been something in the air adrift from the decks of the nearby USS Intrepid or could some of the band members entered a time-warp only to be exposed to the genius works of Rod Serling?

For those who do not know, the Pier was an excellent outdoor venue residing all the way over on NYC’s West Side between NYC’s West Side Highway and the Hudson River. It was truly a fantastic venue to catch any show with its location providing a beautiful backdrop of the waterway well within a stones throw of the USS Intrepid, a former air carrier ship that, after being relieved of duty, transformed into a floating Sea, Air and Space museum.

This entertaining summer event took place approximately 5 weeks into the 1984 tour where FZ & band performed over 2 nights, this show being the very first night. The DHBIM-v contains some footage from this show although most of the material for DHBIM-v comes from the second nights’ engagement on the 26th. However, for this show, there has been some material that has made it to various FZ releases including the YCDTOSA series & HIOS, all listed in the setlist below.

Enjoy this excellent Summer outing in NYC from back in the days of silly hair, designer jeans, the still early years of Mtv & the “Smell The Glove” motto (Arf!).

Arrow SBD SOURCE INFORMATION: The main SBD upgrade portion herein originates from a 2nd generation SBD source as provided by the Robsam-doctorzap Shoebox entry found here:
1984 08 25 The Pier, New York, NY sbd 2nd gen (Robsam doctorzap):

LINEAGE: Maxell XLII 2nd GEN > Nakamichi DR-1 > Realtek HDAudio pentium i7 > Soundforge 10 Pro Highest quality setting Izotope 64 bit src downsampling / MBIT+dither > TLH > WAV > PEAK >2011 patching, editing & retracking > FLAC (level 8)

SQ for this main SBD portion rates as a solid A (perhaps even an A+ for some) and provides a fun listen.

Arrow AUD PATCH SOURCE INFORMATION: It took 2 different AUD sources to render a complete show here. The main AUD portion herein originates from a 1st generation cassette as provided by fzmoi69, then professionally transferred & shoeboxed by doctorzap here:
1984 08 25 NYC 1ST (fzmoi69 doctorzap) DR-1

LINEAGE: Master tape > Maxell XLII-90 1st > Nakamichi DR-1 > Realtek HDAudio pentium i7 > Soundforge 10 Pro Highest quality setting Izotope 64 bit src downsampling / MBIT+dither > TLH > WAV > PEAK > speed correction, patching, editing & tracking > FLAC (level 8)

SQ for this main AUD patch portion rates as a B grade, give or take a brain cell, imo.

The secondary AUD portion herein, which is used for a mere 12 seconds of AUD fills, originates from an unknown generation cassette as provided by mudsharky, then professionally transferred, edited & made available in a 2010 FZ Shows entry by pbuzby available here:
1984 08 25 The Pier NYC 126.14 AUD (mudsharky-pbuzby)

LINEAGE: unknown gen AUD > Sony TC-WE475 > REALTEC AC-97 >
Goldwave (recording) > CDWav (tracking) > FLAC 8 > FLAC > WAV > PEAK > used for small patch to fxmoi69 AUD source

SQ for this secondary AUD patch fill portion rates as a B- grade, imo. Though it is important to note what pbuzby wrote in the FZ Shows entry for this show: “It's not a perfect recording (a rumbling noise throughout as well as lots of crowd) but the darker, stereo sound is a nice alternative to the bright sound of the other version. FZ's talking is also easier to hear.” (slightly edited)

Arrow UPGRADE INFORMATION: This FZ Shows entry upgrades the following 3 previous entries as listed below:

1984 08 25 The Pier NYC 125.45 AUD MC (fzmoi69-Adictedttull-flambay)

I was taping one of the pier shows, with lousy equipment. Everyone was standing on their seats. I got a tap on my butt and it was Big John confiscating the tape.

Thanks, everybody!!

BTW, the technically-correct name of the venue is "Pier 84."

Each of the piers along the Hudson River has its own number... The rock shows (I also saw King Crimson, Arlo Guthrie, the Plasmatics, etc.) were on Pier 84.

Thanks for uploading but I thought there was already a SBD-AUD torrent for this show here? I may be wrong, but if there was a previous torrent how is this one different form the old one?

I agree with jaypfunk: the 1984 gets a bad rep and it's nowhere as bad as people say. I loved the beginning of the tour when Napoleon was in the band. The recordings from that period of 1984 present the best versions of The Evil Prince. My all time favorite FZ tours are 1970-1971 and 1988 though.

Whoa! Tinsel Time!
