Chico Hamilton Quintet - Passin' Thru (1963)

Seeds of jazz rock? Some of this reminds me of the MOI. Jazzier, but still.

Funny you mention that, Chico's bands have always reminded me strongly of MJQ. Its like a flavor. We think of them as being separate and different, the antipodes of Hamiton and Lewis. Yet, that brew of sophistication with a deep, heavy swing... They might have been the same band playing on two coasts at the same time. There were analogues, familiars. Dolphy on one hand, Milt on the other. Hamilton phones in the language from Connie Kay, leaves the exotic schtick at home, Dolphy sends the classicism back to Lewis who rounds it off. Carter becomes the pulse, Tony Williams has the night off and hears both in his dreams. Milt puts the booty on it. Something hip lurking behind the tuxedo.

Ha ha ha, I enjoyed this. The early cello Chico hasn't really caught my ear, but I do enjoy my MJQ.

Today:

Sahib Shibab - Summer Dawn (1964)

Great stuff. It's pretty normal. One could play it at a party and all would remain bubbly. But on closer listening I find it astounding. Maybe because of the fantastic sound? All the instruments are distinct. May, 1964 and sounds better to me than most modern recordings.
This guy says it all: "Shihab’s compositions, largely modal following a strong opening unison-brass melody and varied time signatures, have a perfect retro feel and therefore sound timelessly modern. Compared with the style of jazz emanating from New York in the early ’60s it is hard to believe this is of the same era."
