Amazing these things keep surfacing.

ARKESTRA

first 2 and last 2 letters = Ra Forever?
KEST?
I've never noticed this before.
bRAinpang

Not sure I have this one. Good? Sound quality?

ha!
Yea, it is in excellent sound by Ra standards. And one can score it cheap, and great care has gone into the design & liners so a no-brainer.
And it is 1973, after all, so a double no-brainer.
However, it is approx 43 minutes of which approx 20 of that is a Ra moog spell. I like that but others may not.

PS if ya haven't picked up Struts "Singles" set, do not hesitate. I put it off for a long while, already owning the earlier "THE singles."
It's one of the best collections of it's sort by any artist. I walked away simply amazed, with a new way of looking at things, and I've been at it since I was a baby.

Jeez, another PS:
if ya don't know, the official Sun Ra label, Cosmo Myth, is to be launched this month with The Magic City (compared to the Evidence release, night & day sound, stereo) followed by My Brother The Wind extended. First time on cd and totally oddball even for Mr. Ra.

Oliver Wakeman with Steve Howe - The 3 Ages Of Magick (expanded rerelease) (2001)

Ordered this in a local record shop and guess what? It appears to be a signed copy.

Salah Ragab And The Cairo Jazz Band ‎- Egyptian Jazz (2006-08 comp of 1968-1973 stuff)

there's a track called EGYPTIAN STRUT...so if FZ really was inspired by the title, he'd have owned or heard
the original Egypt issue, which I can't find any detail on; just a mention that this stuff was previously released.

Thanks brainpang for the infos. I'll have to catch up with what's out there that I still might need to purchase. I'm getting slightly confused.

I have lots of time these days, and plan to do a massive listening binge focussing either on Sun Ra or Cecil Taylor.

I'm currently in "brit pop" hell, I meanwhile really dig a few things by Elastica and prepare a nice little compilation
(though I still don't get why it's called brit pop - the stuff I heard, also from other bands, simply is indie/alternative-rock to my ears).

Here's a simple straight ahead one I liked immediately when first checking out Elastica:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4m5WC63BfU
I guess it pushes my PJ Harvey button (and I had quite a persistent Polly Jean-obsession ca. 15 years ago)

Sun Ra yesterday:

Secrets of the Sun (1962)

Continuation, vol.1 (1963 or '68)
I thought this is from 1963 when listening to it, and in certain spots I thought I couldn't believe my ears (I just say "Intergalaxtic Research" - in 1963 ???); I now learned, when looking for a cover pic, that it's actually from 1968.
edit: No, there's more sources claiming this is from March 1963, which would be fucking incredible! Intergalaxtic Research could be from a 2000s avant post punk band trying out a really far out free-formish jam. Mind blown.

feat. Pharaoh Sanders and Black Harold (1964)
Interesting how far Sun Ra had developed the Arkestra's live routines for the next few years already by 1964.
Same goes for Pharoah Sanders' playing... easily as extreme and forward-thinking as Albert Ayler's playing from the same time, but quite different in approach.

Heliocentric Worlds vol. 1 (1965)
The only one in this 1st batch I was familiar with, and I still like it a lot. The open textural approaches here, with bass marimba and stuff, again are quite forward-thinking. Roscoe Mitchell and some other AACM people probably took notes. Strong stuff.
