Aphex Twin - Classics (1994 comp of a couple 1992 ep's, plus some new tracks, I think)

A...uhhhhhh...classic!

That's funny. This is, in fact, the only Aphex Twin album that I actually own. I love it, though, as much for the sequence as for the material.

I'm just happy not to be a Aphex completist. Far from it. But tons of great stuff in the catalog. Interestingly, his much-acclaimed
Richard D. James album always kinda irritated me (in part). The drums parts too jarring and loud. But then on this recent binge I
read a quote from him where he said he looks at the drums like he's playing a guitar. Where you don't think about it, you just do it.
Not sure that works conceptually but will keep that in mind when I get around to listening to that record.

now: gearing up for a Mizell Brothers binge, been filling in some gaps in the collection::

Johnny Hammond - Gears (1975)

ps I need to check out some more Grails. Only have the Deep Politics record.

Deep Politics is a dense one, even as far Grails goes. There's a hell of a lot happening in there! At the beginning, Grails was like a manageable lunch at a good Indian restaurant -- a little lamb vindaloo, yogurt, some chutney, papadum, fruit for dessert. A colorful surfeit of disparate flavors and textures. By Deep Politics, it's like they had cracked the code of audio alchemy and were now serving a hallucinogenic feijoada that produces more and more ingredient as you dug deeper down into the bowl. "What the fuck is this, a braised short rib? Ah, no, it's a raga that speaks Danish and sounds like my grandmother..."

Something like that.

You got me, by the way, hooked on the Aphex Twin. Want to recommend two from the antipodes of his discography? I'll give them a shot and expand my Apex Twin section of my collection by +2.

Re: Grails, other than Redlight and Burden of Hope (albums #2 and debut, respectively) which are so early that they're almost like their own thing, I would recommend tbe Black Tar Prophecies. There's six volumes, I think. I like the first three, a lottle more math rock than metal or weird, but fraught with unpresictable and alternately loud/not loud Grails weirdness. The whole set makes a good survey.

I'm going to go to the grocery store now to shop for dinner. Hallucinogenic feijoada sounds GREAT right now. Maybe just regular feijoada. Or a sandwich.

Finally! A "prog" album I can get behind. A laff riot! One of the best.

ESP Ohio - Starting Point Of The Royal Cyclopean (2016)

Robert Pollard stuff. The tune Miss Hospital '93 is pretty close to what I would call a perfect "pop rock" songs.
