I plan to revisit Steve Lacy's catalogue. I already played a few over the holidays,
this is my favorite from his early modern jazz period:
 |
Keep me/us in the loop. You set me off on a huge Lacy binge the last time this happened. And it was a Joy.
The Lacy-Monk IS a great one. 1959. Way ahead, as we who know know SL was digging deep before the Icon Status polluted
perception. And kept it alive right up until yesterday (or the day he passed on, I should say). Supposedly, Monk tunes are the
most frequently recorded tunes these days. But Lacy did it better in 1959.
NOW: YCDTOSA Vol. 4
I am in serious Frank Worship mode. |
Same thing happened to me! Although the next time I start a Lacy binge I think I will go straight for the 80s. Love the LACY-MONK thing, too. There's something about those Monk covers when they were still contemporaries that makes them feel more relevant.

In recent months, I tried this and that without really catching fire... so no idea if I keep that Lacy thing going.
but today:
a mix by the french/finish band The Dø - not sure I ever mentioned them here.
Their 3rd CD for me was quite a desaster but #1 & #2 include some songs I find brilliant.
I understand they were very popular in France... debut on #1 there in the charts etc. -
Being an item in the first place, it seems the two drifted apart and stopped being active.
Here's one with great vocals & drum/percussion arrangement

I like how my mind has played tricks on me all these years, thanks to the Baby Snakes movie.
I would have bet a grand that I saw FZ & Roy do the Gas Mask bit, but it simply is not part of this show.
But Roy WAS there and I saw him in his chain mail get up. You can hear him sing here and there, remember
him milling about the stage. Sort of a demented mascot.
