while waiting for my Benguerel-orders:

Ivo Malec time here - already was familiar with a handful of works, recently was able to add ~20.

The AGP + some blog offered several older LP-tranfers by him a few years ago, plus there's a substantial
amount of additional works from CD.
What I heard so far: Some wild and, more or less under the surface, humorous stuff.

I love Hill as a composer but it's always fun to hear him in a more comparatively straight ahead context.
Which reminds me I need to pull out my copy of his Grass Roots...

Yea, that Mobley is excellent and so is the Jimmy Woods. In fact, the Woods thrilled me to no end.
I've had that album for years, but I'd never heard it like this before. Love when that happens.

still pushing Hill as band member records w/

Reggie Workman, Bobby Hutcherson , 2 samples of the rare Russell Baba record I found online
(eh, there's a reason you never heard of him) and re-visited via youtube the Greg Osby release (2000)
which made it very clear why I sold off my cd many moons ago.

Maybe I can get to some actual Andrew Hill records one of these days...

Always enjoyed his 2cd INA-GRM collection (Doppio Coro, Etc.) but nothing much else has grabbed me.
Tho' the only other one I can remember listening to is: Œuvres Pour Orchestre Et Formations De Chambre.
A 2cd set. Are you familiar with that one?

I got the latter one a while ago, THE Ivo Malec-CD for me. Recordings of orchestras playing avantgarde stuff
under Ernest Bour in the 60s - that's the kind of thing I'm always looking for! For the chamber music pieces,
I prefer the older AGP recordings.
I don't know that INA-GRM set you mention... Doppio Coro? - never heard of it. More research.

on the other hand (album for yesterday):

debut CD of Lamb (1996) - that's the one of them I like best.

I find this track interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF4hFfDcV7I
sounds like inspired by Björk, and at the same time developing little ideas that would pop up in
Björk's music a bit later - that's at least how I hear it.

Guess I am going to have to pull that one out of the OUT pile and give it another whirl! heh heh.
I'll focus on the Orch pieces.

Back to Goblin here:

Roller (1976) non-soundtrack, straight-up prog record (tho' some tracks were later used for flicks).
Eh, my least fave so far.

Is No Room for Squares the "orange" album? I have a faint memory of a great show tune cover there where he is just slow as hell bit slams the down beat when needed, like working a throttle. Gotta annoy the hell out of the band to float for 2/3 of the break. If I remember, I really enjoyed that album.

FWIW I tried the Andrew Hill dates and longed for the ones where he's support. Maybe it was mood but I didn't find one where it all clicked.

I've been on a Beach Boys kick. Endless Summer has a good selection but misses too much from Pet Sounds. I've been delivering mail all month long to that mofo. Just makes the day easier, but seriously those are some great songs.

Orange-hued, yes. Show Tune: No. If you ID that track, I'd like to hear it.

Inspired by the (way) above, I listened to Gentle Giant - Octopus a couple times via youtube.
I am somewhere between liking it and detesting it.
Still, best thing I've heard by them. Been trying to like them since high school, when pals would play their records.
No Sale!

Great fuckin' album.

Is that consensual amongst the fan base?

Probably...unless Harvey Weinstiein is a fan of course Rolling Eyes
