Frank Zappa &
The Mothers Of Invention

Konserthuset
Göteborg, Sweden

1974 09 25

~~ 2nd gen copy from Barber SBD ~~

From fzmoi69's 'Barber Boards' collection.
Raw DR-1 transfers in Shoebox: http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=21492

includes a tiny bit of filler material (9 secs at the beginning of the Stink Foot cut-in),
taken from fzmoi69-doctorzap's "2nd dubline version" (unknown gen copy of same SBD recording source)
Shoebox seed: http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=21613

And the series of Barber SBD re-uploads in FZ Shows continues with this 1974 Gothenburg, Sweden recording.
A very special 1974 concert in that sense that we are hearing 3 (or 4) world premiere performances here:
- Po-jama People
- Can't Afford No Shoes - first ever performed full version of this song (with original 'Ralph Stuffs His Shoes' lyrics). Previously only been played as a riff within other songs.
- Flambay - probably the only version ever played in a live FZ concert - with Napi on vocals.
- Zoot Allures chords - played live for the first time ever too (here, as an intro to Flambay).

Also worth pointing out, that
1) the Inca Roads Solo of this show has been mentioned in the Sheik Yerbouti album liner notes,
as the original 'basic track' to the Patrick O'Hearn bass line heard in Rubber Shirt [SY].
A version of the Gothenburg Inca Roads solo (edited) including that Patrick O'Hearn overdub can be heard in 1978 WSOU South Orange Guitar Solos Broadcast 37.40 pbuzby

2) That WSOU Guitar Solo Broadcast recording also includes a Trouble Every Day solo (edited) from this Gothenburg show, again including a Patrick O'Hearn overdub bass line.
A different FZ edit version of this same MTED solo (without P.O'Hearn overdub), hitherto unreleased officially and in perfect A sound quality,
can be found in 1976 - The Impossible Concert 45.25 SBD (blackpage-flambay).
This version has also found its way onto several bootleg releases under the name 'Munchkin Tits', ex. Zut Alors, The Mystery Box.

Yes, in addition to The Impossible Concert this solo made it into the strange "build reel" sequence presumably assembled by FZ (Sink Trap -> unknown winter 76 solo -> Ship Ahoy -> More Trouble Every Day solo -> Hands With A Hammer excerpt) that has circulated, sometimes combined with Lather material and (wrongly, I think) identified as the "Zoot Allures unreleased second LP."

This solo finally appeared under the title "Watts" in the semi-secretly released BTB3 only available as a lossy download.

When I first ran across this piece it was 1980, and it was coupled with the Zoot Allures material. The quality was consistent throughout both this and the Zoot material, so it was assumed to be part of that project. Along with material from other LP's, mostly Lather material. Jeff Allen was the 1st person to coin it the 2nd LP. He also had the Ark Soundboard which included more material then the boot. Anyway I think we called it the 2nd LP, because we could not explain it's presence with the Zoot Allures LP. Nothing else made sense. Now it is believed otherwise, but the association with Zoot is all the same undeniable. Obviously the material was all from the same source. Whomever leaked this out, leaked out the Zoot Allures album with it. that is undeniable. This material was in collector's hands in the early 70's before Zoot Allures was released. The Zoot album was with it, it also was leaked and unreleased when it first appeared. Much like many LP's that leaked out. Jeff and I were the next generation collectors, and from an old collector Jeff pulled this out along with the Ark soundboard. The 1960's -70's collector had a 3rd gen of the Ark Sbd. And the build reel, some Lather material, and the Zoot Allures album were presented together, and the sound is consistent throughout. So maybe it is not the 2nd LP, but why it was included with the Zoot material before Zoot Allures was released has never been explained in a plausible scenario to me. Along with material later put on Lather. I.e. I do think it was intended as the 2nd LP. IMHO anyway. It was thought to be constructed after the Zoot release, but in recent years catching up with Jeff again, he said no, the 60's collector obtained the material in 1975. So no attempt to fool anybody, it was obviously leaked from a band member. Later we called it the 2nd LP, before then collector's had no idea the Zoot part was going to be released as Zoot Allures. It was considered all unreleased.

Is this on the tracker in some form other than the The Impossible Concert ot the WSOU Broadcast?

Yes, it is in the 20 years of FZ 12 LP boot, which is on the tracker. Recently the silver edition of this boot (25 copies made) was sold for $2,900.00 on Ebay.

Or it could be The Collected Improvasations boot box set?

I seem to remember a post here or on one of the other sites mentioning that early in the fall 76 tour, FZ gave a college radio DJ a tape including Zoot Allures and some other unreleased stuff. (The tour started around October 10 but Zoot wasn't released until October 29.) That could explain how this tape got out but unfortunately I can't find this post at the moment.

The selection of material doesn't seem to match the "Zoot Allures double album" FZ described in one interview, but it is possible that he changed his mind a few times.

Yes, it probably was. Well we know it was, it was dropped!
It is also possible the collection of the build reel, Zoot Allures, and the Lather material, was given to a band member to study and really had no other relation. At one time it was thought to be a faked tape. Nobody was faking material, or falsely putting material together. This came up in other discussiuons, being in the thick of it back then, i would say that is false. Jeff just mentioned the tape to me causually. It is one he never listed as he thought it was all released anyway. He was reluctant to send it as he thought it was junk. turns out it is the same quality as on the boot, so nothing is new, same mixes released on Zoot, and Lather, except for this build reel. And again the build reel on the boot is as good as my copy, so nothing really important on the tape
