Frank Zappa
KSAN 94.9 FM San Francisco CA
Rebroadcast (this copy) on KPFA 94.1 FM Berkeley, CA
Interview and music with Tom Donahue

Original Broadcast Date: 1968 11 10
Re-Broadcast Date: 1986 02 10 FZ day on KPFA

We are pleased to present a very excellent upgrade to this fascinating trip back in time with FZ and KSAN DJ Tom Donahue. FZ is promoting "Crusing With Ruben & The Jets" by presenting some of his record collection and discussing the folklore behind them. This, along with the KPPC Pasadena appearance a few weeks later (to be upgraded very soon), provide insight into FZ's influences and references used throughout his career.

This radio show was rebroadcast on KPFA in 1986 and was captured on tape by at least three FZ collectors, of which we were provided 1st gens from each to make this version as complete as possible. We are not sure if the original KSAN master exists. The fact that the tape used for this rebroadcast was from a recording made of the original broadcast (by a former KSAN employee) may tend to indicate it does not.

If you are a FZ fan, a music lover, a record collector or even a cultural historian, I believe you will find this to a very interesting and enjoyable listen.

pizmotality & the pompatus of love as discussed on track 25 & 27

pizmotality is a word from a song written by Vernon Green of the Medallions called "The Letter" where he writes a letter to his darling knowing that she'll "ain't never read it"
according to Green pizmotality are words of such secrecy that they can only be revealed to the one you love

Darling, darling, oh how I love you, really do
But you just, just won't be true

Darling, I'm writing this letter
Knowing that you ain't never read it
But each time I write you darling
I pen what lips can't say
Because I love you, although you're so far away
My words caremily (???) that love alone can't tell
And always hope and wish you well all the time
Please hear my plea, please

Darling, what is there worse on this earth
Then to be unable to stop lovin' you
Knowing well that I should
To me a black day, to me a black night
And to kiss and love, and then have to fight all the time
Let me whisper sweet words of pizmotality
And discuss the puppetutes of love
And put 'em together, and what've you have
Matrimony, oh my darling, please hear my plea

Oh darling, darling, oh how I love you, really do
But you just, just won't be true

puppetutes or "pompatus" which was lifted and misspelled by Steve Miller in his 1973 hit "The Joker" and in "Enter Maurice" recorded the previous year
was explained by Vernon Green "to mean a secret paper doll fantasy figure who would be my everything and bear my children"

Miller claims he invented the words "epismetology" (pizmotality) and "pompatus" (puppetutes)

The Joker

Some people call me the space cowboy yeah
Some call me the gangster of love
Some people call me Maurice
'Cause I speak of the pompatus of love

Enter Maurice

My dearest darling, come closer to Maurice
so I can whisper sweet words of epismetology
in your ear and speak to you of the pompatus of love

Part of Agency Man is a different performance and includes (audibly edited on) the tail end of a live performance of "America Drinks And Goes Home". It also sounds better than the standalone "Agency Man" seed and more pleasant than the Mystery Disc version, which is only partially the same, but in poorer quality. A lot of it is actually different when i really listen to it. Close to the other version, but still different. Maybe it's just the mix (this is obviously part of a build reel)
