Hi Folks!

I just got a very interesting contribution to ZappaFrenzy. Dieter Jakob sent me pictures of 23 one sided 8" acetates. Some of these have unreleased version, I will come back to differences later.
Here are the eight first to appear on ZappaFrenzy: http://www.zappafrenzy.com/singles/singles.html#frank_zappa_acetates

Have fun! Smile and more will come later during the week!

Who Needs the Peace Corps is about 12 seconds shorter
Ugliest Part of Your Body is a full minute or so longer. May be the Lonely Little Girl single.
Mom and Dad is 1:04 longer
Idiot Bastard is 19 seconds shorter.

I'm too fat and American to check the Absolutely Free singles right now.

These were briefly discussed in here when they sold on eBay ( http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=13625 ), and there are reasons to question whether they're really genuine items. Warner Brothers in 1966? And why are they labelled "Frank Zappa" and not MOI? hmm

Also, "A Division of Loew's Incorporated" was changed to "A Division of Metro Goldwyn Mayer Inc." in 1964 ( http://45-sleeves.com/USA/mgm/mgm-us.htm )

They sure look nice though Wink

I Have no Idea if these are real

"Why Don'tcha Do Me Right": Starts with 1 sec of Ronnie Williams doing his strange sounds. It sounds similar to the ones at the ending of "Let's Make The Water Turn Black-WOIFTM" but I'm not sure if its the same. Then you can hear: #America's wonderful! Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful it really makes it" from "Monster magnet". "Why Don't You Do Me Right" starts after all this.

This version with the Ronnie Williams sound and the "America is wonderful" segment is featured on the Trick or Treat LP boot and I donīt think itīs the pure single version, probably somebody attached the segments described earlier at the beginning of Why donīt cha do me right, but I donīt have proof (just the folks with an original single version can tell)

The non-playable side with no label has some red writing. audiodisc, made in usa, an upside down A three digit with a nr.

The nr. after the upside down A looks like 126 (the second digit looks like a half 2) on the pre-1969 acetates, and 134 on the 1969 and later ones. Could this give us a clue? I am looking for pictures of other 60's/70's audiodisc acetates to find some answers. Does anyone know what this 3 digit nr means?

Here are detailed pictures of the two different non-playable sides.

Stolen from "Trick Or Treat" boot. I smell a fake.

Audiodiscs were nothing more than blank records for people who had home cutting machines. I have a couple of homemade records that I found in a junk store that had church services and gospel music recorded on them. looking for clues to the matrix numbers on the back would be like trying to find a clue in a lot number on a cassette. All you'll find out at best is where the blank originated.

A little more information is here: http://www.lexpages.com/weirdrecords/weirdrecords.html

I was hoping it maby could provide information of when the audiodisc records was manufactured.

There are some more suspicious things about these acetates.
1: There are some acetates from the same bunch, not on Frenzy yet that are from albums like Hot Rats, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Weasels Ripped My Flesh. These have MGM Labels..
2: Theme From Burnt Weeny Sandwich acetate has 1970 on the label, but seems to be the Weeny the track from WOIFTM acetate.

This have lad me to make a new category to ZappaFrenzy called "suspicious items". Will do this very soon

Without proof evidence to back my opinion, i'd say they are fake.

hints:

a) Warner Bros.

b) Frank Zappa instead of MOI

c) All of them look like new, totally unused - if you follow auctions of other acetates (not only FZ, let's say, Beatles, Stones, etc.), very many of those acatates have either handwritten notes on them, or typos, or misspelled songtitles, or pre-final songtitles etc.

d) In summary, they look too good to be true.

But i'd like to be proven wrong Wink

I will get the rest of them on Frenzy during the week.
I am aware that updates may be a bit slow on Frenzy, but I only have a few hours after work during evening in weekdays, and some of that time has to go to private life aswell. Hope you all understand this.

Thanks Hoops!

Here is what the site says about this disc

Quote:
Audiodisc "A045" -- 12" aluminum core.
Example of disc without label showing batch code number. This one was recorded in April 1961.

I understand that A## is the batch code! This could be useful information.

I'm not sure if this will help you in your specific quest, but this little tidbit surfaced when I looked up the manufacturer of Audiodiscs. a company called Audio Devices, Inc.
