FZ/MOI & Rhasan Roland Kirk, Boston Globe Jazz Festival Jan-31-1969

Al Fresco aquired the 8 hi-res photos, plus he added one additional photo via Blackpage

photos 01 thru 08; 600 dpi [provided by Al Fresco]
photo 09; 300 dpi [provided by Al Fresco via Blackpage]
mag scan, down beat may-01-69 v36n9p36; 300 dpi [provided by magz]
two BGJF concert program scans, 180 dpi [provided by magz]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blackpage [re: photo 09]: " It’s from a book on Kirk called 'Bright Moments' and includes a chapter about Zappa. A friend lent me the book, I had to carefully fold it open to get this scan.

You may want to 'work' this one a little because I had the book spread open when I scanned it, there is a “ghost” on the seam. If you mess with the brightness and contrast a little, I think you’ll find a good result. Looking forward to seeing your photos!

regards

B "

Many thanks to Blackpage & magz for sharing in this special day.

Right on, man!

More comm´s:

"I met him backstage at the Boston Jazz Festival and asked him to play with us if he was interested in our music. Then, during our set, led by his attendant, he came up to the stage. As you know he's blind, but his body understood all of our signals. At one point everybody in the band was supposed to get down on their back and kick their feet in the air while they still keep playing. As soon as we got on our back, he also got his back. When we got up, he also got up. He grasped everything. He is an excellent musician. Three weeks later we played together again at the Florida Jazz Festival."

— Frank Zappa, New Music Magazine interview, April 1976.

These are brilliant. Thanks for posting. Interesting to see that Buzz Gardner is not listed in the programme as a member of the Mothers, but is clearly pictured performing. The reviewer seems to think that he and Bunk are the same person.

Strange also that the reviewer thinks that booking the MOI was a box-office risk compared with artists booked at previous jazz festivals. Surely this was the ignorance of the jazz reviewer and rock music got bigger audiences than any jazzers?

FZ in "The Real Frank Zappa Book" (1989):

"In 1969, George Wein, impresario of the Newport Jazz Festival, decided it would be a tremendous idea to put the Mothers of Invention on a jazz tour of the East Coast. We wound up working in a package with Kirk, Duke Ellington and Gary Burton in Miami at the Jai Alai Fronton, and at another gig in South Carolina."

How about Marshall Adams playing alto sax with Sun Ra?
