not sure if this has been mentioned before...

looks like there will be some sort of a new book about all the different FZ releases and labels.

in german only: http://www.schwarzkopf-verlag.de/vorschau/herbst-2010/grand-zappa.php

not cheap! by the looks of the preview picture i have my doubts about it's completeness, but very likely
i wont be able to resist and grab a copy anyway.

Looks nice indeed, but I must say it's a bit stupid not to write such a book in english...

how true!

the author made the same mistake with his last book "Label Kunde Vinyl".

I was thinking the same myself...

They only ship it to Germany and Austria.

...but it is listed on the German Amazon site, so hopefully those of us outside Germany & Austria will still be able to get it...otherwise we may have to rely on helpful friends in those countries.....

so i finally got a copy...

i didn't want to buy it, i really didn not. but today i bumped into this damn book and i could not resist. i knew this would eventually happen...

first impressions:

it's big and heavy. it's actually so big that i can't read it in bed, and i find that
rather annoying. fully opened the thing measures 62 x 37 cm which is a seriously silly format.
at 2.5 kg it's not exactly lightweight either.

it smells nice enough. there's better books to sniff, but this is not bad...

there is a short foreword by Ben Watson in english. the rest is in german and that is probably the most annoying thing. what the hell was the author thinking? by publishing a german only book, i immagine that the chance of selling more than 12 copies is slim.

when you remove the dust cover, artwork by Cal Schenkel is revealed. i like that!

each release starts of with a page long introduction, it's musical concept, stereo vs. mono comparison, vinyl vs. cd, differences to later issues and bla.
I didn't read all that stuff (and i probably wont), all the information (and more and more balanced) is available on zappateers anyhow.

i was more curious about the discography itself, the different pressings from a completist point of view.
and that made me smile, there is a lot of different pressings with label photos and matrix numbers. i am positively surprised. i like matrix numbers.
no, it's not complete, it can't be. and the different UK pressings are surprisingly far from complete, but nevertheless the content is better and more substantial than expected.

there is a picture of a brazilian "Fillmore" in the "JABFLA" chapter. mistakes like that are a bit
irritating in a not-so-cheap book.

these are first impressions.

there will be some input to the "official releases" section from this book for sure.

will i look through the book often? most likely not, but as i now have it, i might as well appreciate it.

merry christmas

Thanks for the review, detritus...sounds like a nice book, but he's shot himself in the foot by publishing in German, which is a real shame... i wonder if there's plans to put out a more user-friendly and broader appealing (ie english) paperback edition (i'm guessing your copy is hardback?)
