Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention
Rockpile
Toronto, Canada
1969 05 24 late show

~~ From 4th gen stage recording ~~

Yet another Toronto '69 upgrade, but this is not just an upgrade. While most of you probably are familiar with the material here, I don't think many have heard it presented this way before.
The Don Preston stage tapes from Toronto 1969 have been circulating in many incarnations, labeled with many different dates and venues. In recent years, this show has been identified as two different Rockpile shows: Feb 23 late and May 24 late. While working on a version of the so-called May 24 late show, which I hadn't checked closely before, I found an overlap between the two. So it turned out to be one and the same show, which drdork convinced me to label as May 24 late.

And so, my recent seed of "1969 02 23 (L) Toronto" (http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=19700) becomes obsolete - all the music from that seed is included here. If you don't want to download it again, instruction follow below.
I still had to use a fill from my unknown gen tape, but this time only 12 seconds.

Drdork's 3 arguments why 1969 05 24 (L) is the most plausible date for this show:
1. The presence of André, who at the early show on that night had just arrived in Toronto.

2. Pound is introduced as Pound, whereas on 2/23/69 (early) Toronto it was introduced as String Quartet.

3. Aside from this tape, Igor's Boogie, Redneck Eats, and Eye Of Agamotto are not known to have been performed before April 1969, and Some Ballet Music is not known to have been performed before May 1969.

Preliminary, revised FZShows entry:

1969 05 24 - Rockpile, Toronto, Canada
Late show

94 min, Stage, B+
With André ??? on vocals (*).
My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama, Charles Ives, jam, Some Ballet Music, improvisations/prelude to Uncle Meat, Uncle Meat, drum duet, Eye Of Agamotto, jam, Lonely Lonely Nights, Orange County Lumber Truck Medley, instrumental, The String Quartet, Igor's Boogie/Little Doo-wop, Dom DeWild's electro-genetic experiment, Call Any Vegetable, Redneck Eats, Stone City*, Trouble Every Day

This version: 94:10 min, Stage, B+ (mono up until 0:58 of track 04, from there stereo)

Lineage: Stage recording > Reel-to-reel tape (4th gen) > CDR (standalone burner) > EAC > SoundForge 10.0 (speed correction, editing, tracking) > Trader's Little Helper (flac level 7)

Lineage fill: Maxell XLII tape, unknown gen > Denon DRM-800A > M-Audio Audiophile 2496 > SoundForge 10.0 (minor EQ adjustment) > merging with main source

Taped by: Don Preston
Transferred by: LC (fill source by Yojimbo)
Edited by: Yojimbo

Setlist:
01 My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama
02 Charles Ives
03 jam
04 Some Ballet Music
05 improvisations/prelude to Uncle Meat
06 Uncle Meat
07 drum duet
08 Eye Of Agamotto

10 Lonely Lonely Nights
11 tuning-up and audience interaction (to fill source @ 2:34)
12 Orange County Lumber Truck Medley (back to main source @ 0:02, end of "Oh No" lost to tape flip)
13 audience interaction
14 instrumental
15 A Pound For A Brown preamble
16 A Pound For A Brown
17 Sleeping In A Jar
18 Igor's Boogie/Little Doo-wop
19 Dom DeWild's electro-genetic experiment
20 Call Any Vegetable
21 Redneck Eats

Track 01 - 10 were previously identified as 1969 05 24 (L).
Track 11-23 were previously identified as 1969 02 23 (L).

...that's right, you heard right: Thanks to flambay for speed correction advice!

Hope you'll enjoy this new way of hearing this show!

Thank you so much for this Jon. It couldn't have come at a better time.

BTW...any chance we will be seeing upgrades/new seeds of these tapes?

10/03/68 Copenhagen
10/20/68 Amsterdam

These are both missing from my collection. Thanks again!

Sorry, I got interrupted. Here goes:

If you've already downloaded my previous 1969 02 23 (L) Toronto 55.28 Stage 4th (Yojimbo) seed, here's what you need to do:

1) If you haven't started the download already: create the folder 1969 05 24 (L) Toronto 94.10 Stage 4th (Yojimbo)

2) Copy or move all the FLAC files from the 1969 02 23 (L) Toronto 55.28 Stage 4th (Yojimbo) folder into the 1969 05 24 (L) folder, except "01 tuning up.flac".

3) Change the names of the FLAC files by replacing all "1969 02 23 (L)" with "1969 05 24 (L)" (this is done very easily with the program Ant Renamer) and add 10 to all the track numbers. For example, "1969 02 23 (L) Toronto ON - 02 Orange County Lumber Truck Medley" becomes "1969 05 24 (L) Toronto ON - 12 Orange County Lumber Truck Medley".

4) Start the download of this seed, and you should start with a decent percentage.

Hope this works!

Thanks, sounds great! Btw, when the FZShows entry will be corrected, there's also a little minor typo on that page:

"Piano/Drum Duet" on "1969 08 06 - Ravinia Outdoor Music Center, Highland Park, IL" is indeed "Redneck Eats" (as titled on "Ahead of Their Time"). Source: my ears Wink

cheers

This same typo appears (three times) on my copy of YCDTOSA 5!

Actually, on AOTT it's part of "Like It Or Not".

And on Orchestral Favorites and LSO, it's part of "Bogus Pomp".

I think we have to accept a certain amount of variation in the title of this music.

Wohops, yes, you're right. It was titled "Piano/Drum Duet" on YCDTOSA5. I have mixed them up, sorry.

But anyway, as this piece is mostly listed on FZShows as "Redneck Eats", I think we should keep that title for each time that piece is performed Wink

I didn't meant "typo" as to say that that title was a typo by iteslf. I meant that by listing a piano/drum duet you could have mistaken that track for a simple piano/drum duet rather than a composed piece

cheers

I actually agree with you. Consistency is desirable, and "Redneck Eats" is a preferable title.
