Jim Ruffi - drums
Ike Willis - vocals & guitar
Ray White - vocals & guitar

Notes: A great night with a whole lot of teamwork going on among the tapers. Between, taperj, morst, John S. & myself we were able to get the SBD feed split to all of our decks as well as run mics, so other mixes may be in the works. I need to thank taperj HUGELY for letting me use his mics, securing the SBD feed, the cables he let me use, & also for recording the following night! Great to hang with analog414 & his Nagra / DPA rig also!

Tech notes: The SBD source needed to be "tempo adjusted" to sync with the aud source, it ran about .5 seconds longer than the aud over 90 minutes, this was done in Logic Pro. Enjoy!!

Jesus that was quick! Wow! I'm going to have fun comparing all these sources. Sounds like just a fun night to be with all those tapers! I miss taping, but it's just not possible these days.

Well, I made the 16/44 from the 24/48, so it was sitting in the same folder, just had to rename it. Smile

This one was a slight challenge because of the 2 different recorders & the variation / jitter in the 2 word clocks. As unicrayon pointed out, it's the digital equivalent of tape running at different speeds from one source to another. The only difference here (a big one) is that it's only tempo & not pitch - weird stuff.

Yes, I'm interested in these matrix type recordings. Still a hell of lot easier even with this problem. Take two analog tapes from years ago with pitch never constant in either of them. It's a nightmare. they will sync for a bit, then once again out of sync. So here really the pitch is the same, but the speed of the decks vary slightly? I wonder if you sent both to a technition if he could calibrate them at the same speed? Maybe one deck is in need of calibration anyway?
I'm interested to hear Rick's analog version. Judging from other recordings I have heard, the analog setup really does a great job. I don't know if we will see any of the other taper's examples, but I sure would like to see them. Again, as a former taper, i still like to hear different mics, and set ups. It is an art. Position too is important. When all near each other and such, i really would like to hear all then, as this can eliminate postion as a factor. I grabbed some jam band stuff in the past as just so many tapers had examples, one could really evaluate equipment.
Thanks again I notice you really bring stuff here a lot, and it's great. All these other tapers, and i rarely see their work. Yours will never be lost to time now.

I've actually never seen different sources of digital audio and digital video sync up without having to tweak one of them. I was talking to a pro last year about it - He said "it's acceptable".

In a non linear piece you'd shift the audio to match the beginning of any clip that was visibly out of sync with any scene cut .... and with multiple camera shots over a static sound track, you'd shift the video clips around frame at a time. Basically, there's never a long enough edit to notice a half second drift over 3 hours.

Staying in sync for 3 hours is only important to us Smile

Was Ray White actually able to sing at this show? I saw P/O in Cleveland on 12/30 and Ray had all but lost his voice and only spent about 15 minutes on stage throughout the entire show. Quite a disappointment.

That's too bad that Ray let you down. I wonder if he was sick? He must have been, I thought he was quite good, definitely no disappointment at this show!

Yeah, Ray made a comment about being sick, I can't remember whether on night one or night 2, that he told his wife he "let another woman take care of him"(Ike's wife I believe?) and said he had been almost without voice.

Hey, that's right, they did do two shows in Chicago, didn't they? Were both of them taped?

Indeed, taperj was on the mission, I had to work so I pleaded with him, though I think he was going anyway. He sent me the files & I am working on a mix of the same sources for night 2, should have it ready soon!

Ray said in Chicago that he was sick in Cleveland, and that's why they didn't do the Enema Bandit until Saturday. I think I'll post my KM140> Beyer MV100 > H2 source without matrixing on the first round, and see if anyone cares to hear the difference. TaperJ said that the 140's and 184's were quite similar, a little more detail but a little more crowd noise in my 140's compared to the 184s on night 1. That night, his mics were within 1' of mine, but his were slightly higher up.

I am working on the P/O Milwaukee matrix right now from 2010-01-03. Hope I got the pitch correction right this round, i've been working on it for a couple days, then took a break to record two Camper Van Beethoven / Cracker shows this weekend! Smile

Every pair of digital decks has a different clock-speed discrepancy. Once you get the ratio for each pair of decks, you can sync up sources easily. So for instance, if I figure out that my H2 runs 0.094% faster than Rollo's R09, then that is not going to change for those two decks. Any time we run a show together, we can matrix sources with that same pitch correction for recordings made on those two decks. Any other two decks will have a similar situation, but the number will vary. I've found most recorders are within about .02% of each other, if not closer.

I was the drummer on this tour. Ray ended up with a throat condition after the first night that lasted throughout the tour. He was really bummed...imagine a singer like Ray not being able to do his thing. Every time he pushed himself a little to try to do his stuff, he ended up worse off. We were scrambling, getting him throat coat and other herbal teas and remedies.

It was definitely a "Diseases of The Band" tour for Ray and I. I had the same throat thing as him and spend the last few nights with a nasty sinus infection.

I can tell you this: Ray is about the nicest, most supportive musician I've ever met and it was a privilege to work/travel with him. I really felt bad about his voice. You should have heard him the day before we left on the tour...he still has that great voice we all heard back in the day!
