Frank Zappa - United Mothers In Manchester Of Invention

Live at Apollo Theater - Manchester, UK 12. February 1979

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

D I S C L A I M E R :

Version on the tracker:

1979 02 12 Manchester 149.00 SBD (Yojimbo) - ZTLS#181 & #316
http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=2576

The only glitch I've noticed on the tracker's version so far, is on CD 1:
Track 14 --> "Honey Don't You Want A Man Like Me" --> at about 01:52.

On this bootleg's version, there is NO glitch at this position, but therefore
we have a glitch on CD 2: Track 06 --> "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" --> at about 05:28,
wich is NOT on the tracker's version.

And, there are some other glitches too.

My question is: is this bootleg taken from a source closer or further to the master?

To my ears, the sound quality is as good but the volume level is a little bit lower here.

FYI I A/B'd this and Yojimbo's verson on Wet T-Shirt Nite. I spotted (uhm ear'ed?)a volume boost during the instrummental part which is not present on this bootleg version. As a promoter of preserving the original dynamics of a recording I want to extend special thanks to Pittylabelle for putting this version up here. Smile

The big question here would be: who's hoarding lossless source of this one?...

Good point. I was surprised to find a boot that's unmolested compared to the regular show seed, really. Don't bogart that tape!

I really do not agree with the original dynamics statement, as I often transfer material, and well certainly can adjust dynamics with what recording levels I use. Often making multiple passes to try and make whole recording about the same level. Often tapers adjust volume on the fly, as do dubber's, if not working with a master copy. I have no desire to duplicate their mistakes. You could apply some hiss reduction to amplified part, to avoid change in hiss levels. But often hiss levels do change on quiet passages even on master recordings. You also run into saturation problems, where preserving the error, certainly is not healthy for the recording.

I would like to mention that a 50 minute version of this was first to appear (in the early 1980's). IMHO the recording is better then this copy, or Yojimbo's. Too bad it is only 50 minutes.

Any chance to get also in touch with this 50 minutes version?

Yes, I will look at it eventually. My copy is from Spencer Streeter, original owner of G&S Music.

I would really like the person who had this full copy to produce a better copy. I also received a copy, tested it, and it too was mp3 based. Somewhere is a lossless copy...
