Yes, always nice to get upgrades to these early shows. Really amazing this place. I think the flood will continue too, with new people who taped coming online everyday. Kinda ironic I can't get though my own collection as so much new is online all the time! No complaints...

Great! Another '74 show...,the year I saw them. Anyone know of a recording from 1974 03 07 Normal, Illinois (I think I have the date right, not absolutely sure though)? Illinois State University. I could only find it on one list, no known recordings. I wouldn't be surprised if Zappa had one. My friends and I were sure some of Roxy and Elsewhere was from that show. The dance contest was just too close to what we'd seen. The auditorium there was new, with great acoustics, nothing like the field house where they usually had concerts. Frank obviously liked the place. At one point he ran over to Ruth's station and played the vibes.

Sorry to go on and on. Thanks JS-doctorzap-The Evil Prince

edit...The Zappa Giglist states The '74 Normal show 07 03. I thought I might have transposed some numbers. I wish I hadn't tossed my ticket stub collection.

No, the stories are good, we are all fans! Normal is an interesting mention. As we know a 1980 Normal IL show exists on tape. Tom Brown obtained a copy from a trade, years later he noticed a very unique performance, on the tape. I forget exactly what was very unique? Anyway he took the tape to Arthur Barrow so he could elaborate on this performance. AB lost the tape. I recently talked to Tom and the tape was never found, it's years later. He cannot remember what trader he got it from? That trader could have other Normal tapes, bummer, still missing to this day. Not one copy has been found. This defines the major driving force behind this site. We do not want this loss of music to continue, and we are determined to preserve all the tapes we can.

Yeah I concur Frank probably liked Normal. As you say he gave a spirited performance in 74, and the 1980 show is special too, so yeah looks like something about this place he liked, and it came through in concert.

The arrangement of Andy, which Arthur explained was not rehearsed in advance but entirely cued by hand signals.

I think he preferred Deviant.

Thanks for the encouragement, Drew. I'll have to look up the '80 show. Normal is right next to Bloomington, Illinois. Yes, lots of Normal jokes. Being a college town, it was (probably still is) a good concert town, and not too far to go from Springfield, where I lived back in those days.

Opposites do attract, I found Frank's behavior normal, bordering on typical. Of course my friends are quite the bunch. I never found Frank shocking in any way. He reminds me of my friends really.
