This show has mostly been circulated through the two boots "Pygmy Pony" and Dupree's Paradise. Here's a version that I've received on CDR from a veteran collector. He gave me some more useful information on his tape:
"My tape of Duke U, 2/24/73 is not from a vinyl bootleg. I've had an open reel tape of that show since about 1974. My copy was dubbed off a dolby reel. Since no dolby reel-to-reel recorder was available to decode it, I just made a straight copy off the reel. That's the reason that the recording is so hissy."
So, not from vinyl and surely low generation, but some added high-end and hiss.

Samples are from:

01 start of tape (has a few seconds less than my boot rip)
02 Inca Roads (doesn't have the cut found on "Dupree's Paradise")
03 improvisations (two cuts in the following crowd noise)
04 Montana (cut=tape flip? On my boot rip, 50 seconds of the guitar solo, the part before the cut, are missing)
05 Don't You Ever Wash That Thing? (mid side B)
06 Don't You Ever Wash That Thing? (end of tape)

This comes from the university audio / visual Dept
they filmed the concert
I have been promised that someone would get the
video for me but it has never materialized
so its good to see this low gen source
the video is known to exist

IIRC, there is a circulating video of the Grateful Dead at the same venue five years later. Also an a/v dept project?

Something tells me the Dead were just more "Grateful" to share these with the fans...

Shocked Wow! That would be a fantastic find. I used to know people in the area through a work client and frequented there about 10 years ago. Wonder if any of their spouses/relatives have contacts with the university. It's been a long time though. Wish I had thought to ask then.

Jon -

I'm not too keen on this source. It's mono (the boot is stereo) and it doesn't sound quite as good as the boot. The hiss noise is also more obtrusive than the surface noise on the boot. This is just IMO but I think you might agree.

My copy of the "Dupree's Paradise" boot is less noisy than the ones on the tracker, though it sounds basically the same. Let me know if you think it's worthwhile to transfer and clean up. There are enough rips of the commercial boot I think. I was hoping to make a properly cleaned up and speed corrected "tracker" version. Perhaps we should make two versions?

No this has dolby played with no dolby. Dolby b needs to be applied to recording..somehow?
See info.

I have a copy of this, mine has about 1 second more at start. Sounds dull compared to this one, no hiss, boot is still probably better. Since this doesn't have all the cuts, and I have yet to check mine, this still is useful for now. I think mine is mono too.

I transferred my copy of the "Dupree's" boot LP and I'm about ready to start cleaning it up. Already it's noticeably cleaner than the versions on the tracker and worthwhile using for a "definitive" version I think. I transferred it "wet" which cut down on surface noise by 90%.

I was wondering if Jon and/or Drew could figure out what's missing from the boot LP's and post it here as fills? Cuz I'm gonna be needing them soon. I'm using "Dupree's" as the main source, "Pygmy Pony" for some fills and this tape source is gonna be needed for the rest of the fills. Thanks in advance for any help.
