Thanks. I was at this one too. I know, I should have my mouth washed out with soap for saying this, but out of the few dozen times I saw Frank live, I recall this being the only FZ show I found boring. It was probably me, but I am definitely going to check this out to see if it was the pedestrian performance I remember it being, for the most part.

(partially distorted/overmodulated)

some of this can be aleviated by using the smooth function -1 setting running it twice

but of course I wanted to present it raw as possible

according to the taper the pa was way overdriven and the spl where they were

was insane

I think the next new section should be for mastered MC shows ! IMHO

Not a bad sounding aud at all. Sounds close to where I was sitting at this show. Thanks for this snapshot for the audio photo album!

If I might add a few cents to the "blasphemies" uttered earlier in the thread, I don't think the Felt Forum shows were an original part of this tour itinerary. If memory serves, they were a last minute addition to the tour schedule (correct me if I'm wrong). If so, it's possible the band was a little tired.

To blaspheme yet further, of all FZ's touring ensembles, 1984 was, in retrospect, probably my least favorite and it had nothing to do with the individual players (how could it?). I think it had something to do with the overall timbre of the band. Somehow, the combination of the electric drums (which, as I understand it, Frank had to really plead with Chad to use and the novelty of which wore off pretty quickly no matter how skillfully Chad played them) and Alan "Volcano" Zavod covering Ed Mann's percussion parts combined to create a sound that was excessively midrangey and somewhat artificial (the draconian remixing on the DHBIM CD was a big improvement in this regard. I'll bet surround mixing would be even bigger). It seemed to soften the edges too much, which to me was at odds with FZ's angular, precise, exacting compositional style . Also, I know of no instance in '84 where FZ's guitar tone ever varied from that thick, midrange honk. This is not to say there weren't some fantastic shows and performances on the tour, it's just that, by and large, '84 seemed, at least by comparison to earlier tours, kind of by-the-numbers. Frank may have quietly felt that way himself, considering what a contrast the '88 band was.

Still and all, I'd rather live with it than without it.

...And it was still a lot more interesting than most of what was going on in that mid-80s coke-rock era...

Zeeker, it seems we have been to a lot of the same shows! Cool
It's weird, I enjoyed listening to this excellent aud tape today. But, I have to agree with you. This was one of my least favorite FZ concerts I've attended. It wasn't a matter of drumpads or Zavod's tone. I didn't like the Forum. The sound sucked compared to the Palladium. Too many cops (post Who trampling incident). Did I say the Forum sucked? Sitting in the back of this old boxing arena cuts you off from the action (Spent the night watching a multitude of doped up idiots in front of me disbelief ). And it really lacked the vibe the Palladium had, especially for a Halloween gig (The Palladium oozed atmosphere!).
The place to be was the Pier Shows earlier that year (missed them Mad ). The energy of the Humor Video proves that.

Everybody delved into electric drums back then. Frank the drummer probably bugged when they first came out. The artificial drum sound wasn't as noticeable (sitting in the back of the Forum) as the lack of Mann and the sorely missed Mars (I'm a big Tommy fan, it bummed me out when I noticed he wasn't there. Though, Alan does rock that piano sometimes ala Duke and I like that).

Felt Forum, NYC October 31, 1984

My 7th show of the 1984 tour. I had tickets to both the early and late Halloween Shows. For those of you that live where Halloween is not a holiday, Halloween is a pretty big deal in the NY metro area. Everybody dresses up and has a good time.

My biggest recollection about the band is that they sounded very tight by the time they had been on tour for a few months. Although the 1984 is not my favorite arrangement of players and sound, they did play the music well and seemed to have the set list down very well.

NY and Halloween, Frank and the band and the entire audience were having a good time. I had dressed up for the show and dragged my younger sister to go along with me.

Between shows, my sister and I were walking outside the Felt Forum and who do we meet up with on the street? Allan Zavod!

I spent a few minutes talking to Allan, believe it or not he recognized me from when I spent some time talking to him after The Pier shows back in August. I asked Allan if my sister and I could take a photo with him and he said yes. I asked if he had an address where I could send the photo to.

After the photo was processed I mailed him an 8x10 copy along with a self addressed post card saying "I got the photo". I think I got the postcard return 5 years later from Allan's wife in Melbourne, Australia. Apparently, he got married and had a child.

My ticket stub shows I sat 30 prom, section 205, row H, seat 7
