|Introduction to The Zappateers Listening Sessions
The Zappateers is about so much more that just collecting and collating Zappa Show Recordings and bootlegs.
We try to keep in touch with one another via our chat room #zappateers.
You too can join us – it won’t cost you anything but your real-life relationships may suffer!
If you are a regular user of IRC then take a look at the Zappateers Website for settings for your IRC client, and join us online.
If IRC is new to you, then the quickest way to get started is to click on the Click to Chat link in the top of this page.
The Zappateers keep the music of Zappa alive by holding regular Listening Sessions.
Here’s how it works…..
During the week someone will seed a Zappa show to the Zappateers tracker that will be clearly labelled ZTLS followed by a number.
For example at the time of writing the latest show for a listening session is labelled on the tracker as
‘FZ - 03-03-1976 #1 - Copenhagen, Denmark - AUD - jaypfunk - (ZTLS #169)’.
The date and venue are self-explanatory, the AUD signifies an Audience recording,
and the seeder has identified himself (in this case jaypfunk) to distinguish this particular recording from any others that may exist of this performance.
The ‘ZTLS # 169’ signifies that this is the show for the Zappateers Listening Session number 169 (yes we have been going that long).
Everyone who wants to join the session will download that show during the week and then meet up in the chat room on Sunday with the files already to play.
At a prearranged time (usually 1900hrs Greenwich Mean Time(pdf-file)), we all start playing the same recording at the same time, and enjoy the show together. to check directly use GMT and compare to your local time.
You can chat with people from all over the world as you all listen to the same concert at the same time.
For some participants that means simply means the odd comment like ‘Wow – great solo’, whilst others may discuss all manner of things during the session, and others still just lurk – being on the channel without contributing to the discussion, which is fine as well.
[ just keep one thing in mind dont throw anything on OP's... this might cause the end of the session ]
The session is usually streamed – that is played ‘live’ over the internet – but quality takes a nosedive when you stream,
and as most of the Zappateers have DSL connections, we prefer to download.
If you start with a live show recording you’re already down in sound quality from the digitally re-mastered Official Releases.
Streaming an audience recorded show may well render a decent show un-listenable.
However, for those who are stuck on modem connections, streaming offers a way to be involved.
