(for those who already downloaded - simply rename the files to start with "741127" rather than "771127" and you're good to seed)

Frank Zappa
November 27th, 1974
Civic Center Arena
St. Paul, MN

A quick and dirty fix of a pretty good late-74 show. Highlights include a nice and goofy Village of the Sun, a quote-tastic Stinkfoot solo, and a thirty-minute "our bass player probably doesn't know Dupree's so we're just gonna jam" improvisation, featuring all the booger standbys a young teenager would expect. The sound isn't the greatest (A/A- is a bit kind, B+ is more accurate. I think the venue's PA system is to blame (I wouldn't expect much from a civic center), and the result is a slight lack of overall frequency response - like this was broadcast over the radio or something), but that's just nitpicking.

This comes from the Dick Barber Collection, which has accounted for a good portion of our summer/fall 74 recordings. Special thanks to EasyEd for sharing his first generation copy with the world!

This has been speed corrected and re-tracked, but is otherwise identical to EasyEd's fixed seed.

LINEAGE:
Dick Barber's cassette > X's copy (made on an NAD cassette deck)

transfer by Easy Ed with X's participation and advice on tracking:
X's copy > JVC KD-V6 3 head cassette deck (Dolby off) > Sek'd Prodif Plus soundcard > Sound Forge > extract regions to .wav files > FLAC level 8 encoding align on sector bounaries

ZP edits:
Easy Ed's copy > .FLAC Frontend (decoded to .WAV) > WavMerge (all tracks merged) > WaveLab (speed correction per flambay's advice - -30cts for main show, -40cts for encores) > CDWAV (tracks re-split) > foobar (tags + ReplayGain added)

Many thanks for the speed-correction!

Not a big thing, but the files are mislabeled (77 instead of 74). Very Happy

I'm sure we get a new torrent here also.

Seems some contributers have very worn-out eyes these days. Wink Wink

To nitpick the nitpicking, I think FZ would have been taking his own PA to most shows, but your description of the sound matches what I remember. Not sure why this was, but probably some combination of 1974 cassettes, a "reference-only" recording setup and poor preservation up until the tapes came into circulation in the 90's.

In any case, thanks for the reseed.

I'm not sure how a PA would affect a soundboard anyway? AFAIK, it doesn't in any way. I guess at times one positions an overhead mic fed to the board, but in most cases this is not done, a direct feed is used. Or a combination of both.

Guess I was in a 77 frame of mind?

I'll up another .torrent, those who'd rather not waste ratio can just rename on their own. In Windows, go to a command shell, then:

> <type the drive letter, followed by a colon - if your Zappa stuff is in G:\~~Zappa~~\, type "G:" without the quotes>
> cd ~~Zappa~~ (if your stuff is in, say, G:\~~Music~~\poodle\bites\chews\, you can either type "CD ~~music~~\fido\bites\chews\" or "cd ~~Music~~", then "cd poodle", etc)
> cd 1974 11 27 St.Paul MN 124.47 SBD 1st gen (EasyEd-fl-ZP) (if that's too much typing (it is), you can move the files to a different subdirectory, like G:\~~Zappa~~\rename, navigate there, then move the renamed files back)

Shouldn't the filenames in the ffp.txt be corrected as well?

Thanks very much for the upgrade!
