One of my friends played me "St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast", and then my uncle gave me a copy of the Apostrophe/Over-Nite Sensation double album.

For me it was a slow process, first getting to know Zoot Allures, Joe's Garage, Sheik Yerbouti, Tinseltown, Them or Us... and being very picky in the first place about the tracks I liked (- mostly the instrumental-based stuff... I discovered FZ's "song world" quite slowly).

The first one that made me think "yes - that's IT. Pure greatness!" probably was Uncle Meat... but I purchased that when I already had a bunch of Zappa-LPs already, when I already had been into Zappa a bit for probably one year.

So yeah... I really can't nail it down to one particular album.

I read 16-pages special feature on Zappa in polish magazine Tylko Rock, with reviews of most of his official catalogue. I really like descrpitions of WOIIFTM and Burnt Weeny Sandwich. I bought WOIIFTM on CD and "Hot Rats" on official polish cassete (licensed from Ryko).

I was maybe 8 years old when I was shifting through my big brother's album collection, when I came upon the Hot Rats album. I was a big horror movie fan, so that cover hooked me big time! But when I played it, my "top (pop) 40" trained ears couldn't handle it! Alas, the imprint had been stamped into my brain.

So it really started a few years later when I put Overnite Sensation on the turntable and proceeded to wear out that vinyl till it was unplayable. smile010

Yet, it is Hot Rats that I play over & over now. I guess first impression is everything.

After Waka Jawaka was when I realized there was a lot of diversity to his albums and I was interested in hearing the rest of the catalog.

I agree, it all started with Freak Out for me in 1982/3 then Joes Garage then SUAPYG..wow it changed my life, I'm still listening these days between 4 to 5 hours a day, more at weekends. I suppose it's similar to trying a crack pipe, one hit and you're hooked! Smile
