OK - here follows my attempt to start to unravel the UK releases of this album- corrections/amendments/additions welcome

The very first release of this album included a libretto, and the Frank Zappa E.P. The cover had a sticker that sealed the opening of the cover (this was before records were regularly sold shrink-wrapped in the UK). In other words the sticker had to be removed or slit in order to get at the records. The E.P. was catalogue number XPS 147 Side A Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar Side B 1) Variations on the Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression 2) Why Johnny Can't Read. The cover was a matt finish, and some very early editions (like mine) also included a marketing sheet. I would be interested to know who else had one of these - see pictures attached.
The matrix of these earliest releases were
Side 1 CBS-85804-A1 B Side 1 Dinkum
Side 2 CBS 85804-B1 Side 2. .:. Dinkum .:
EP Side 1 XPS-147-A1 : ) :.
EP Side 2 XPS-147-B1 ¦ :.

The second release (or second batch of the first release) was exactly the same but without the marketing material.
The matrix of these releases were
Side 1 CBS-85804-A1 B Side 1 : ) Dinkum
Side 2 CBS 85804-B2 Side 2. V Dinkum : )
EP Side 1 XPS-147-A1 A
EP Side 2 XPS-147-B1 A

The third release or batch was issued in a slightly glossier finish front cover and the matrices read A2 and B3. As far as I know most of these did not have the E.P. The ones without the E.P. all tended to be a slightly glossier finish that the ones with - all included the lyric sheet. Over the ensuing 25+ years the E.P.s and L.P.s are rarely found together, so working out exactly what editions came with or without the E.P. is tricky.

Digitally Remastered Version
The Patio lists:
Digitally remastered vinyl (EMI EMC-3501 1985? [Capitol ST-6534, 1982?)] (might be the same as the version below!)
UK re-issue (Fame FA 3180?)

I have the Fame version which is also listed as EMC 3501 so I am tempted to think that the EMC 3501 and the FA 3180 version are one and the same.

Does anyone out there have the EMC 3501 issue that is not on the Fame label ?

I have also included some pics of the Japanese OBI.

More information appreciated

Note the LP timing difference on "I Come From Nowhere" compared to the CD (6:20 vs 6:05). A mislisting?

cheers

Timings for I Come From Nowhere

All vinyls are listed as 6:20 although they are in fact nearer 6:10 (as it is a fade out it's a bit subjective where the track actually ends).

I have two CDs:
Ryko RCD10537 listing it as 6:09
Zappa CDZAP42 listing it as 6:10

So TBS - what CD do you have that lists it as 6:05 ?

Oh, I must have mistaken, as I did it from memory. I do have the Ryko RCD10537, and since it's my least favourite album I almost never play it.

cheers

A great spot nevertheless - and another timing mistake unearthed.
cheers

Do all of the (your) 3 "first" pressings have the "Home Taping Is Killing Music"-ad on the lower left back cover?

Yes - sorry - missed this question - yes all three have the Home Taping Is Killing Music on the bottom left of the back cover.
