Rehearsals

~~ samples from WIU2B tape ~~

available tapes according FZshows:
1979 02 08 London, UK Rehearsals
60 min, SBD, B
Easy Meat, Twenty-One ("evolved" version), I'm A Beautiful Guy, Thirteen, Twenty-One, Conehead, Twenty-One,
City Of Tiny Lights, Inca Roads, Florentine Pogen, Honey Don't You Want A Man Like Me?, Packard Goose, Dead Girls Of London

"Never seen as lossless" according to the catalogue, here's a set of samples from the WIU2B tape of this 1979 rehearsal.
Let's hear if other competitive versions are around so with this one we can get all known 1979 Rehearsals on the tracker, eventually.

Main part of this rehearsal consisting of extended work on the different parts of Packard Goose (~27 mins),
but imo the most interesting parts can be heard in the unfinished snippets (work in progress) in the first segment of this recording,
around the tracks named Twenty-One and Thirteen.

This samples set includes the complete first 7 tracks (01 Easy Meat > 07 Twenty One) plus snippets from 08 City Of Tiny Lights, 09 Inca Roads and the end of 14 Dead Girls In London.

I'd be interested in particular to know how we should name this snippet currently named 790208-untitled (Track 04),
which in its final bars leads into the Thirteen/Mystery Rehearsal Piece theme.
AFAIK this portion has never been heard in any other recording.

Setlist (& tracks/samples seeded here):

01 Easy Meat 1:02
02 Twenty-One ("evolved" version) 2:10
03 I'm A Beautiful Guy 0:36
04 790208-untitled (incl. Thirteen) 2:02
05 Thirteen (incl.another unknown riff) 1:26
06 Conehead (incl.Wet T-Shirt Nite riff) 0:31
07 Twenty-One 2:14

08 City Of Tiny Lights 5:42 °°° sample 08 from beginning
09 Inca Roads 5:08 °°° sample 09 from beginning
10 Florentine Pogen 5:24
11 Honey Don't You Want A Man Like Me? 3:09
12 Packard Goose 10:06
13 Packard Goose (extended work on final part) 17:32
14 Dead Girls Of London 4:20 °°° sample 14 from end of tape

Total time 61.27 min

This version: 61.27 min, SBD/Stage mono, B+/B

Good idea - I transferred this to my HD not long ago. The first 10 min of this tape are highly interesting.

Nice one....memory lane for me.

I spent too long in 1978~1980 attending zappa concerts @ the Hammersmith in london while I lived there. Shocked

I had a friend in the music media industry I shared a house with back then. Tried to get into watch this rehearsal.....no luck sadly Crying or Very sad . Nothing ventured and all that...........but at least I saw most of the concerts this rehearsal was for the following week. Surprised

On the untitled item, it might be worth looking into the "Sheiks Rehearsals" boot...that was a similar time period....again Ive been to sleep since then and forgotten. roflol

good luck anyway and will wait with baited bretah to hear this one.

cheers

This should be interesting. Where were the rehearsals? The Odeon?

The other rehearsals from 1979 were a revelation to me, and alone out of curiosity to hear new material, I'll download these samples. Can't wait for the complete seed. TDK-cheesy TDK-cheesy TDK-cheesy

My tape sounds virtually identical to this - must be very close to each other in the trading vine. Did you get it from a German trader, H? There's a minor difference in the hiss - I'll get some samples up.

Well fancy that. I wouldn't have thought Frank would have wanted to go within 5 miles of the place.

Actually, no. In the interview known as the "Dark Star" from February 1, 1979, FZ mentions that he needs to end the interview shortly as he has to go over to the Rainbow for rehearsals.

Huh, I missed that. Of course, FZ didn't play another show at the Rainbow Theatre after 1971.

It's not like the theater pushed him offstage. Two intersections, each I got into an accident. One messed me up good. I go through them almost daily. I see no reason not to rehearse there if convenient. At least Frank recovered from it. I never will. Stevie Wonder wrote Superstition, not Frank Smile

No not German. P-O O from Johanneshov. He had a nice trade list with Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Yes and the other usual suspects and a lot of FZ.
